Some Ear Diseases, Stories from my Family and How to Prevent

Ear is a key organ of our body (functioning not only to hear but also for balancing also). Like all other body organs, the ear is also prone to many diseases. Ear diseases can range from minor to severe and and this can lead to permanent hearing loss when not properly cared for.

Ear diseases and their common names

Below are some of the ear diseases that are common.
Otitis Media —Infection in the middle ear usually caused by bacteria or viruses often triggered by a cold which causes congestion/ blockage of Eustachian tubes usually associated with flu or allergy.
Otitis Externa (Swimmer's Ear) — this is an infection of the external auditory canal and commonly occurs from leaving the canal too wet allowing the bacteria or fungi to thrive in the warm, moist environment.
Tinnitus (ringing, buzzing in the ears due to exposure to loud noises… impaired circulation… side effect of some medications)
Presbycusis:- The natural degenerative loss of hearing that damages the hair cells in the cochlea.
— ear barotrauma, a condition caused by a change in air pressure like when you are flying or diving.

Personal Experience with Ear Problems

Do you have any ear health issues? Well, I felt my ears hurting after I swam for so long. They were Congested at first and a little bit of a ringing. I got a sharp pain in the morning that got worse after one more day. After seeing the doctor just so I knew, it was Otitis external (also called Swimmer's ear).

Do you know what the doctor said resulted from water getting into my ear and growing excessive bacterial growth.

How to Cure and Prevent Your Ear Infections

Following are the important steps for treatment and prevention of ear infection:
Keep ears clean — Don't put cotton swabs too far in place or they just push the dirt further into the other ear. Scrub just the skin of the ear.
Take precaution against too much water Exposure – Ensure that ears are absolutely dry on post swimming or showering. Use earplugs.
Take care of your respiratory infections: As because ear infections are usually preceded by the flu or allergies, you have to make sure that the respiratory system is immune.
Reduce loud noises– Long-term loud noise can injure the hearing cells. Wear ear protection when you are in noisy environment.
Consult a doctor without a delay — you must seek immediate care if you are experiencing severe ear pain, discharging from ear and or sudden deafness for ENT patient
