🦷 What is periodontics?

Periodontology is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting the supporting structures of the gums and teeth, such as the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. Periodontists treat gum disease, perform procedures such as scaling and root planning, and place dental implants. They treat teeth and gums while maintaining gum health and supporting the foundation of the teeth. This treatment is called periodontics.

🦷 What are the parts that make up the periodontium?

The periodontium is made up of four main components. These are: -
Gingiva: -
It is a soft tissue that covers the alveolar bone, surrounds the teeth, and protects them from bacteria and physical damage.
Periodontal ligament: -
It is a network of connective tissue fibers that connect the teeth to the alveolar bone, providing cushioning and shock absorption.
Cementum: -
A calcified layer covering the root of the tooth, which helps to anchor the periodontal ligament fibers and protects the root surface.
Alveolar bone: -
The part of the jaw bone where the tooth socket is located, supporting the tooth and securing it in place.
All these components work together to maintain the tooth's stability, absorb chewing forces, and protect it from infection.

🦷 What procedures does it perform?

Periodontics follows various methods to maintain the health of the gums and the supporting structures of the teeth. Such as: -
Non-surgical treatment: -

  • Scaling and root planing remove plaque and tartar from below the gums and smooth the tooth's root to prevent the accumulation of bacteria on the tooth.
  • There is also antibiotic treatment to prevent bacterial infection.
    Surgical Treatment: -
  • Gingivectomy is a treatment that removes diseased gum tissue to improve oral health by reducing deep pockets.
  • Flap surgery is a treatment that lifts the gums to clean the infected areas and reattaches them to the teeth more firmly.
  • Bone that has been lost due to periodontal disease is replaced, encouraging regeneration.
    There are also: -
  • Guided tissue regeneration methods
  • Crown lengthening methods, etc.

🦷 What are the diseases that attack the periodontium?

Periodontitis can be caused by various reasons. However, the most common diseases include: -

  • Reddened gums, swollen gums, and bleeding
  • As the inflammation of the gums increases, the gums and bones are destroyed.
  • Severe painful gum infection characterized by ulcers, bad breath, and necrosis
  • The most severe form of periodontitis is the gradual destruction of the gums, bone loss, and tooth mobility.
  • Aggressive periodontitis is a progressive form. It often affects the teeth and bones of young people.
  • Severe infections like NUG destroy the periodontal ligament bone. It usually occurs in people with low immunity.

🦷 Recommendations for caring for periodontal tissue.

Preventing gum disease is essential to take care of periodontal tissues and maintain overall oral health. For this, what we need to do are: -

  • Brush your teeth twice a day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to gently clean the gum line while brushing.
  • Floss daily. Flossing helps remove plaque and tartar from below the gum line.
  • Use an antimicrobial mouthwash to reduce bacteria and inflammation.
  • Stop smoking.
  • We need to eat a balanced diet.
In all these ways, we can take care of our teeth.
