Health Matters; Genes and Genetics
Hello beautiful people of Healthy Steem community. I hope you're all doing good. I like educative topics like this Health Matters brought to us by @sahmie, today is about Genes and Genetics.
Created using WPS
Genes carry attributes from one parent or both to an offspring. These genes pass from generation to another generation, the study of this is known as Genetics. Example of gene is a mother can give birth to a child with blue eyes like the father, while she the mother has black eyes.
What makes you unique, like having your mom's eyes or your dad's smile?
What makes me unique is having my mother's face, and her finger nails, unlike my brother's, they took my father's nails. Mine are so cute, that we sit and make jokes about the things we get from her and my father. I get a lot of comments from people saying, I'm my mother's carbon copy.
Why do some diseases run in families, like diabetes, or heart conditions?
From parents, great-grand parents, children, grand-parents, they often share similar health problems. There are inherited factors that put one at risk of there's a particular disease that runs in the family. These risk factors are passed down from parents to child through genes.
There are possibly many causes of human diseases, family history is mostly a strong risk factors such as cancer, psychiatric illnesses, diabetes, etc. Inherited genetic variation that is in a family has a huge connection either directly or indirectly to pathogenesis of disease.
How do genes decide things like hair colour, eye colour, or even how tall you'll be?
There are acids found in every human cell, it's called Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), these acids are only seen by a powerful microscope. This DNA is compromised of four chemicals, which form pairs in different combinations.
This combination form different codes that are genes with traits such as female sex, male sex, body type, eye colour, height, etc.
Have you heard about DNA testing? How can it reveal your ancestry or health risks?
I've heard about DNA testing. DNA test is a test carried out medically to identify mutations in the chromosomes, genes or proteins. To identify if you have any genetic condition, it's mutation that can indicate it.
This test also identify certain risk for either passing a genetic disorder or developing a condition. A sample of your hair, skin, blood, amniotic fluid, etc is needed for a genetic testing (DNA).
I would like to invite @josepha, @zory23 and @saintkelvin17 to join this contest. Thank you.
Thanks for the comment and going through my publication dear friend
