What is Malaria?

This is a disease that is caused by a parasite and this parasite is transmitted into humans by the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito. This shows that a bite is enough to cause malaria as long as that mosquito is infected. This parasite can also be transmitted to humans through:

  • Transfusion of infected blood and sharing of sharp objects.
  • Mother-to-child transmission: An infected mother can transmit the parasite to her unborn child at birth.

Malaria can be known by some common symptoms but it can only be confirm when one is diagnosed medically. The common symptoms are:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Fever: This is a situation where the temperature of a person rises above the normal. The body becomes warm or hot thereby making the infected person uncomfortable. Sometimes, this fever is accompanied by shaking of the whole body (chills)

  • Headache: Headache is when a person feels pain in any part of his head which may be mild or acute.

  • Muscle or joint pain: This is a situation where a person feels very weak and also experiences some pains in his muscles or joints.

If malaria is not well treated or if allowed to stay long in our bodies, it affects our lives in the following areas:

  • If the malaria parasite becomes too much in the blood cells, it causes seizures or coma. Seizure simply means loss of consciousness, which can later result in death.
  • Anemia: Malaria can cause anemia which is the shortage of red blood cells in the body.
  • Low blood sugar: Malaria if severe and allowed to be in the body for long tends to cause low blood sugar
  • kidney failure: Severe malaria issue can damage the kidney. Thereby affecting the entire body.
  • Respiratory problem: If malaria is allowed in the body for a long time, it may become severe and, in turn, affect the respiratory tract thereby causing hardship in breathing.

How to prevent malaria

Malaria can be prevented through the following means:

  • Clearing of stagnant water and bushes around us where mosquitos live and brude younger ones.
  • Using of insecticide: Insecticide should be used to kill mosquitos in our rooms and surroundings.
  • Sleep under nets: Individuals can sleep under mosquito nets to prevent mosquito bites which in turn causes malaria.
  • Natural mosquito-repellent creams like Odomos can be used directly on the skin to prevent mosquito bite

Conclusion
Health is wealth! Let us all fight mosquitoes to live malaria-free. I invite @deetalka6, @hamza657, @emishael60 and @mini80 to also participate.
