What's carpal tunnel syndrome? Write in your own words after getting knowledge from the lesson post.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that mostly arises when the region of the wrist is being compressed even though there are other factors that could cause it.

The factors that causes Carpal Tunnel syndrome includes;

  • When the carpal tunnel becomes smaller than the median nerve and when the median nerve is compressed passing through the carpal tunnel.
  • When there are changes in the hormones due to menopause or pregnancy
  • When there is continuous pressure or an over using of the wrist in cases like typing, it causes the muscles to be weakened or damaged.

The symptoms of Carpal tunnel syndromes includes;

  • Due to the compressor the nerve in the thumb, middle and index finger, there’s a prickling sensation and lack of feeling.
  • Present pain in the fingers, hand and wrist which increases usually at night
  • Due to constant usage, the muscles of the forearm becomes weak.

The types of carpal tunnel syndrome are:

  • Acute Capal tunnel syndrome which is caused as a result of injury or trauma, this lasts for few days or weeks.

  • Chronic carpal tunnel syndrome which lasts for weeks to months and the symptoms comes gradually due to constant use.

  • The cause primary carpal tunnel syndrome is unknown.

  • Secondary carpal tunnel syndrome comes due to diseases like diabetes, pregnancy or as a result of injury and trauma.

How would you diagnose a carpal tunnel syndrome? Any clinical investigation or assessment tests?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can be diagnosed through different ways but the commonest are;

  • By physically examining the patient by the therapist or doctor
  • The nerve conductor study test which is used to measure the speed and muscles while EMG checks the electrical activity of the muscles.

Some special kinds of tests are also used for diagnosis confirmation. Such tests includes;

  • Flicks test
  • Phalens test
  • Timely test
  • Reverse phalens test
  • Compression of the Median nerve
Try to practice at least 3 exercises that you have learned from the lesson. Share images, gifs or videos while practicing preferably gifs or videos.

Arm Prayer Stretch

The arm prayer stretch involves putting your arms together pointing upward in a praying position and stretch downwards. This helps to relieve the pain and tension in the arm and wrist region. Ensure that the pressure is not painful.

Wrist rotation

This involves rotating the wrist in a clock wise or anti clockwise direction as it helps to enhance the movement of the joint of the wrist, reduces the joints inability to move and the symptoms brought about by the pain. When performing the excercise , Keep arms and shoulder in a relaxing position.

Median Nerve Glides

Put your arms on the wall with you fingers pointing downwards and stretch our neck in opposite directions back and forth the arm. The symptoms is alleviated as the median nerve passage is improved.

The exercise can be performed on a five five repetitions during the first week and can be increased with time accordingly. Soft tissue mobilization should be done before performing the exercises in order to reduce pain and also heating pads should be applied for about five to ten minutes after performing the exercises.

Share your review after performing these exercises either on yourself, healthy individual or patient.

There was pressure on my exercised parts and after followed a relaxing feeling of relieve. It’s needful to easing symptoms on the wrist and arms.

Thank you @ashkhan for the lesson. I ask @beeswrites, @pandorasdiary and @jovita3 to participate in this engagement challenge.
