Health Matters (17); ANTIBIOTICS AND OUR HEALTH
How do antibiotics help us fight off infections?
There are a whole lot of things that antibiotics will help to face fight off infections. I will be listing out some of the below;
- Antibiotics help to inhibit cell wall synthesis and those cell walls will help to build cell walls that always go a long way to strengthen bacteria.
- It helps to disrupt protein synthesis that might want to produce some harmful bacteria in our body.
- It helps to strengthen our immune system in our body which goes a long way to actually prevent harmful infections in our body.
- it also helps to damage some bacteria cell membranes as those cell membranes produce those bacteria that are harmful in our body and so It helps to prevent it.
- Most especially, antibiotics work against only bacteria as it does not work against viruses or fungi. It helps to reduce the rate of bacteria in our body that might want to cause some infection.
What are some side effects of taking antibiotics?
There are some side effects I have come to discover about antibiotics which I would like to talk about below;
- Digestive Issues: Sometimes, antibiotics can lead to some digestive issues like causing stomach pain, diarrhea or even loss of appetite at times.
- Allergic Reactions: As body chemistry is different, sometimes some antibiotics can give one allergic reaction which if not treated well can lead to more severe issues.
- Skin Sensitivity to Sunlight: it can also lead to some skin damage also which can lead to issues like sunburn.
- Liver or Kidney Damage: Then lastly, there are some antibiotics that can actually lead to kidney damage or even liver damage in some cases.
Why is antibiotic resistance a problem, and how can we avoid it?
Why is Antibiotic Resistance a Problem?
There are some reasons why I believe antibiotics resistance is a problem and today I will be mentioning three of them below.
- Ineffective Treatments: The first is that sometimes it can lead to ineffective treatment because they no longer work again.
- Increased Severity of Infections: Since they are no longer effective any longer, it can lead to more illnesses and infections in our body.
- Spread of Resistant Bacteria: Then the last one is it can lead to more spread of high resistant bacteria if not effectively handled which can be dangerous as it can even increase more health risks.
How Can We Avoid Antibiotic Resistance?
There are some ways I believe we can avoid antibiotics resistance.
The first one is for you to constantly use the antibiotics responsible and did not abuse it.
Then the second one is that you should avoid sharing or saving antibiotics. There are some antibiotics you must not share with people because body chemistry and allergy is different.
Then the last one I will add is for you to always practice good hygiene. Make sure you always wash your hand regularly and stay clean to avoid spread of infections.
Do antibiotics affect our immune system?
Yes of course our immune system can be affected by antibiotics most especially negatively if there is an indirect use. Antibiotics can indirectly kill some bacterias in our gut which is very useful to help our Immune system. Sometimes it can affect your body against fighting infections.
Not only that, if you did not handle it well, it can lead to more infections happening most especially when there is a high resistant bacteria. It can also lead to dependency on antibiotics which at the end of the day will have a negative effect on our immune system which is very dangerous.
Can we treat diseases without using antibiotics?
Very possible, it is very possible for us to treat diseases without us not even using antibiotics and I will be making list of some of them.
- There are some diseases that can be treated by hydration or even through vaccination and some antiviral medications but these are limited when it is virus related diseases.
- There is also something called antifungal treatments that does not need antibiotics. There are also some anti-parasitic Medications that have been used to treat some diseases also.
- For Diseases caused by wounds, the way to treat them is through proper cleaning and dressing of the wound also and even some herbal remedies can go a longer also to treat those diseases without the need for antibiotics.
How can we use antibiotics responsibly?
There are ways we should pay attention to to actually make use of antibiotics wisely which I want to share with us today.
- The first one is that we should always take the antibiotics only when we are prescribed so that we will not abuse it. We should avoid something called self medicating that a lot of us always engage into.
- The second way to make proper use of antibiotics is for us to finish the prescription instead of using it halfway. We should not also save antibiotics.
- Then lastly is that you should not share antibiotics. The antibiotics that is for us is different from others. Don't share antibiotics with anyone anyhow.
