Elderly nun looks after many stray dogs in remote Thailand temple
The amount of stray and abandoned dogs and cats that exist in this country and the rest of the world is pretty staggering. Our organization is a small one but we do what we can to help out in Krabi, Thailand to ease the suffering of the homeless animal population as much as possible.
Recently, we met a nun at a temple who despite being very poor herself, has the compassion to look after as many stray animals as she can. She lives in relative poverty, but is likely happier than most people with 100 times as much wealth as she has. For her, it appears as though happiness is not achieved through the latest TV or I-Phone but rather by giving out as much love and compassion towards animals as she is capable of.
When we were made aware of her efforts we were more than happy to help out.
She looks after around a dozen cats and dogs that live inside of this remote temple area that she has called home for most of her life and she is truly an inspiration to animal lovers like myself.
Her accommodation is something that would be considered depressing to most people, she has no vehicle, yet the entire time we were around her she was all smiles and laughs as she went out to see all of her babies whose tails would wag like crazy whenever she got near them.
It kind of puts things into perspective doesn't it? The trivial things that a lot of us complain about such as poor Wi-Fi or needing a faster computer don't even occur to her. She lives a very simple life and enjoys it a lot more than people who have much more in the way of possessions than she does.
The kindness that she shows to all of her babies extends to anyone who visits and we had nothing to worry about as far as being considered a threat as soon as they saw us walking with her. We were immediately swarmed with the same love that she receives from them and I think this says a lot about the mind of an animal. There truly is no such thing as a "bad dog" just bad people that encourage this sort of behavior.
It is well known that unwanted dogs are dropped off at temples on a regular basis in Thailand and it is up to the monks and nuns to look after them from that point forward. The past 18 months have been tough for these temple workers because due to various restrictions, even temples were closed and this reduced the amount of donations that they were able to receive for themselves, let alone for the dogs and cats that they feed.
This is why we decided to make this temple a regular stop for Krabi Animal Welfare in order to bring her large bags of dog food so that we can help her to continue her completely selfless act of looking after the less fortunate beings that she sees every day.
We have also decided to make this a future mission for us to get into this remote temple and sterilize and vaccinate the animals here as soon as possible in order to prevent their numbers from growing even larger. There are so many places like this in Thailand and while we wish we could extend beyond just Krabi, we simply don't have the funding to do so. But we do what we can and with people like this nun (I sincerely apologize for forgetting her name) it makes our job so much easier.
We will look forward to visiting her again in the future: There are certain people in this world that just spread joy everywhere that they go and she is definitely one of them.
