SLEEPY

(Sleep Almost Cost Me My Job)

Precious had called me earlier to tell me she’ll be coming the next week, which I was happy to hear because it’s been such a long time. But nothing prepared me for the rush of emotions I felt as I stared at my friend of over 15 years standing outside my door step with her traveling bag in hand, looking so stressed out from the journey all the way from Owerri to portharcourt.

She hadn’t changed much, just that she got even more beautiful and looked more plumper. I was super duper excited! I felt like screaming, which I actually did!

We hadn't seen each other in months, and I was excited to spend some quality time together and catch up on what has been happening in our lifes. It’s was a nice Sunday afternoon and the smell of my party jollof rice was all over the place which she didn’t miss.
“Madam I Dey hungry o” she called out, lol. “Do I look like your mother”? I fired back! That was just the beginning of a very exciting long night we were going to have.

As we sat on the couch, reminiscing about old times and sharing stories, the hours flew by. Before we knew it, the clock struck midnight, then 1 AM, and still, we chatted on. I couldn't resist the urge to hear more about her adventures and share my own….this was the part I had missed most in our friendship! The talk! It worked like therapy, I was feeling so alive and active. I haven’t laughed so hard in months!

It wasn’t up till 4am we decided to call it a night, because I had to be at work by 8am that morning. My head hadn’t even landed on the bed when my alarm rang, it was already 7:00am in the morning! I groggily got off my bed and rushed to the bathroom to get freshened up for work, I hastily applied makeup on my swollen face, not that it did so much good. I hurriedly told my friend that I’m off to work.
“I’ll miss you, she said with a very sleepy voice, I’ll miss you too” I replied. I rushed to the kitchen for a much needed caffeine boost, I knew I’ll need it.

As I arrived at the office, my usual sharp focus was nowhere to be found. My eyelids drooped, and my movements felt sluggish. I tripped on the stairs, spilling my coffee all over my shirt. My colleagues looked on in concern as I struggled to compose myself. I could see concern in some eyes and disgust in some others, I didn’t bother to explain myself, I just sluggishly found my way to my corner.

Throughout the day, my clumsiness only worsened. I knocked over a plant, spilled papers everywhere, and even accidentally deleted an important file. My boss called me into her office, a mixture of confusion and disappointment etched on her face.

"Is everything okay?" she asked, eyeing me with concern. "You seem a bit... off today."
I hesitated, unsure of how to explain my sleep-deprived state. But then, I confessed, sharing the tale of Precious visit and our late-night chat fest.
To my surprise, my boss chuckled and nodded understandingly. "We've all been there," she said with a smile. "Just get some rest tonight, and let's pretend today never happened, deal?" Yes ma! I replied.

I left the office that evening with a sigh of relief that I’ll finally get a chance at a good sleep. My day at work ended as fast as it began, I picked my bag and headed for the bus station as I hurriedly made my way home. I didn’t know my ordeal just got started.

As I got into the bus, I laid my head on the window just to get a 30min nap before getting to my house. It wasn’t until I felt a tap on my shoulder that I woke up.
“We don reach? I asked. Where you Dey go the conductor asked me? I mentioned my bus stop, “we don pass there since na!” I looked out of the window and found out I was 1hr away from home! I didn’t know if I should cry or scream!

As I got to the house, I sat down reminiscing about how my day went i couldn't help but laugh at the chaos that had ensued – all because of a wonderful, yet sleep-depriving, visit from my dear friend.

Temptation has such a powerful compelling force. And I think my friend Precious is a strong temptation, because immediately she got out of the kitchen after fixing me dinner, every atom of sleep vanished from my eyes and we continued right from where we stopped!

I have to be at work tomorrow! Somebody help!

I would love to invite few of my friends to participate in this contest, @ninapanda @ngozi996 @cristyshona .

Okay, I don't blame "you" for falling asleep on a bus.
Those tires singing on the road and the bus shaking had me falling asleep plenty of times when I had to catch a bus to school.

Best wishes!
