TELL YOUR STORY 33 (A DAY THAT CHANGED ME FOREVER)
Here is my story on how I stopped being a coarse young lady.
I was just 13 years old then and I got admitted into one of the best secondary schools in my town. I became very stubborn and arrogant.
I became very disrespectful too, especially to my pairs and even my elders. I literally allowed the admission, which was just for a secondary school, to get into my head. I wonder what could have happened if it was to be the great Oxford University.
That cool evening which later turned out to be a sad evening for our neighborhood is a day I'll never forget in my life.
This girl, who I assumed to be my age mate, came looking for the owner of the house I and my family were living on rent and I started yelling at her. She and her family packed into the neighborhood just a few days from that day.
“Why didn't you specifically greet me? Don't you see that I am now a student of one of the best schools in town”? I asked her rudely.
She didn't say anything and I threatened to beat her the next time I saw her. My Mom who has been there trying to talk to me all along picked up her slippers and threw them at me but I dodged them.
“I'll catch you and when I do, my mom won't be there to rescue you. I'll beat you the way I want. I yelled at the girl.”
My mom told her that I wasn't going to do her anything. She pleaded with her and told her not to mind me. She asked her to go home because the person she was looking for was not around either.
My mom wasn't aware that Aunty Udy, the landlady was inside. A few minutes later she came outside and asked if anyone came looking for her and my mom described the girl.
All of a sudden, we heard screams from the direction of the main road and we all ran there only to find that the girl was hit by a truck and she was badly injured. She gave up the ghost before she reached the hospital.
I couldn't sleep that night. I blamed myself. I told myself that she was scared of my threats, that's why she couldn't pay attention when she was crossing the road.
From that day till this day, I turned a new leaf. I think about her every now and then, I hope she's resting in peace.🕊️
Our words and actions have consequences, and we should always treat others with kindness and respect.
Arrogance and harshness can lead to regrets that last a lifetime. It's important to be mindful of how we speak to people because we never know what might happen next.
