Choices! What will it be? #41 [The conical flask]

in Steem For Ladies10 months ago (edited)

Wishing a very Good day to all steemians, I and thanking @patjewell for organizing this multiple-choice contest which I have selected the Erlenmeyer Flasks to write about.

The Erlenmeyer Flasks

An Erlenmeyer flask is most commonly known as a conical flask, but you can also call it a titration flask as it is often used for titration. The conical flask is a type of laboratory flask which has a flat bottom

It's easy to find this laboratory equipment in a chemistry class or lab. That is where I first saw it.

Description

Classified among laboratory glasswares, a Conical flask is made out of glass; a special heat-resistant borosilicate glass that can withstand high temperature. It has a narrow cylindrical neck with a flat bottom and can be described as having a conical shape. It is an 1860 creation of a German chemist by name Emil Erlenmeyer.
The conical flask comes in different volumes and are most of the time graduate with a place you can label using a pencil. Some are made with special ground glass stopper that can provides an airtight seal. It can seal so well that even gaseous compounds can be stored in it.

If you are looking at the conical flask based on the type of mouth it have. We can say they are of two types, one with a small mouth and another type with a much wider mouth.
Standard sizes of conical flask are 25 ml, 50 ml, 100 ml to 1000 ml, and up to 6000 ml.
There is a special type of conical flask known as the A Büchner flask

Uses

In the lab it is used in mixing liquids during titration and heating liquids when doing volumetric analysis of substances. Because of the shape of it's neck, it is used with a filtration funnel.
In a biology class or lab, it could be used in the preparation of a microbial culture, needed during tissue culture or a DNA extraction.
You can use it to hold samples during distillation.
The Büchner flask version of the conical flask is a commonly used for filtration under vacuum.

The Advantage of Conical Flasks

This important laboratory glassware has the following advantages;

1- A conical flasks is versatile and may be used for various purposes like for mixing, for heating, and for storing chemicals.

2- Being heat resistant, Conical flasks can be used to heat or boil chemicals.

3- Having a flaring neck makes it easy to pour liquid in and out of the conical flask.

4 - being designed with a broad base and a narrow neck which helps when stirring or rotating liquid without spillage.

5 - The small neck design of a conical flask greatly reduces evaporation loss during heating.

The disadvantage of Conical Flasks

The Conical flasks is not perfect because it also has some drawbacks, such as;

1 - It's irregular shape makes it a poor tool for measurement.

2 - Based on the limited thickness of it's walls, we cannot really used it for high chemical reactions.

3 - Conical flasks may be easily cracked or damaged when improperly handling.

Precautions when using a Conical flask

The flask has to be sterilized and wiped clean before using it to avoid contamination. After use the flask should be rinsed with warm water or with tap water. It should be stored in a dry box to prevent contamination.
Handle the conical flask with care and don't drop it.

Conclusion

I will love to call on the following Steemians to participate in this contest @izzybea @madylin02 and @duocaish. Here is the Contest link
