• What do you understand by food preservation?
Food preservation is the proper way of handling or preserving food from getting spoiled. Food preservation is one of the essential thing because aside of handling the food from been damage, it will avoid food poisoning, maintaining the nutritional value of the food, preventing microorganisms from surviving.
• Explain 5 ways of preserving food.
Certain methods are commonly used for the preservation and storage of food. These methods include:
Canning: This involves using tins which are sterilized and airtight. Through this method food can stay for many years without being spoilt, e.g meat, fish, vegetables
Refrigeration: Certain food can be frozen in refrigerators for preservation. This includes meat, milk, vegetables and butter.
Smoking: This method is used to preserve meat and fish. It involves the use of both smoke and heat coming from fire below the meat and fish. After sometime, it will appear black and almost roasted. Thus the meat or dish is said to be smoked.
Salting: In this method salt is spread all over the meat. This will make the meat stay for a few days without rotting.
Processing: During processing method, certain food crops can be processed. After processing, it can stay for a fairly long period without being spoilt, e.g. yam, Garri and flour.
• Let us know the best way of preserving perishable foods.
Perishable food are those food that can spoilt easily or become unsafe to eat if not properly kept. Examples of food perishable are egg, cooked leftover, fish, meat, tomatoes, fresh vegetables..
Ways by wish perishable food can be preserved, some of the best are as follows,
Refrigerate: This process should be done within the time of 2hours.
While storing certain perishable food, it should have a vacuum packing.
Make sure the storing has a right temperature.
Storing perishable food that is in a large quantities can be preserved by the used of

It is the best for managing a large quantities of perishable foods and is normally used in companies, supermarket.
• People say eating freshly cooked food is better than eating preserved food. What's your opinion on this?
People have their choice of taste when it comes to food. To me, I prefer freshly cooked food to preserved food. Reason been that, sometime the storing of the food may not be properly kept under the right temperature or the food that might not take a longer days might be kept longer than due days, thereby when eating, can cause food poisoning that can be very harmful to the body.
In addition, preserved food will lack freshness, vitamin C and B, it will increase the risk of heart health, hypertension, there will be no essential nutrients again and it will also loss the texture and the flavour.
