RE: How well is China recovering from the COVID-19 outbreak? - An useful piece of data

in SteemLeo4 years ago

It is also worth noting that while China claims only around 3,000 people died in the outbreak, their telecom companies report 14 million cancelled phone numbers.

Consider 3 things. 1) In China, you can only have 1 SIM card and it is tied to your ID (the registration process for a new SIM card is hours long), and...

  1. Everything from rent and utility bills to virtually ALL financial transactions are done via phone apps in China, so no phone number means no financial transactions of any kind.
  2. Considering that the majority of the country has been working from home and has been required to install DingTalk, wouldn't one expect the number of phone subscribers to go up? Yet it has dropped.

The death toll in China was a minimum of seven figures. Period.
Also, schools have not re-opened, and military officers are still on universal quarantine.

Thanks, I read about the phone numbers cancellation. Not going to debate whether China reported numbers are accurate. In my earlier post, I mentioned that the only data I can logically rely on is those from Diamond Princess.

That is why I am checking side channel data instead of reported data. Traffic info is one of such side channel data and of course the those cancellation numbers from China telcos are also noteworthy.
