Prologue
Good day guys, it's yet another post to learn from. I'll be writing an original story that illustrates perfectly the saying: "There is light at the end of the tunnel". Please keep calm while I narrate this story, it's emotional and pitiful but true. Let's goooooooooo
A painful beginning
She wept and mourned as was the custom of the land, she was expected to wear the black long gown for 4 market days(1 month) as a ritual to appease her death husband's spirit. She was treated with disdain and apathy wherever she went, Mmayen as that was her name had lost her husband at the age of 36 with 6 young kids to cater for.
The married women's group evicted her as she was now a widow, the only inheritance left behind by her husband was the thatched mud house which sheltered them from storm and rain, but the husband's kindred wouldn't let the young widow be. She was made to drink her death husband's bath water on his funeral to prove her innocence concerning her husband's death. Torment is an understatement as I can't find a suitable word to describe the ordeals she went through.
Mmayen strived hard to be the breadwinner and mother to the children. I forgot to mention that she was heavy with the seventh pregnancy when her husband kicked the bucket. Hence the lastborn never met her father, so sad.
Two years later, the husband's kinsmen who kept close watch on the family decided to throw them out of the thatched house. They were told never to step their foot on the compound anymore, that's when the real temptations came. Mmayen was forced to relocate back to her late father's house with her children.
Since there was no help for the young widow and her family, she was forced to give out some of her grown up children as house helps . The burdens were just too much for her to bear, if only he survived the accident, this wouldn't be happening.
From grass to grace
Mr/Mrs Albert Nkennta was one of those who came to Mmayen to ask for one of her children as an house help. They decided to leave with Glory as she was well behaved, neat and respectful.
Glory worked hard for the couple who took her in. Due to their childlessness, they decided to adopt her legally and make her their own child, they were stinkingly wealthy. Although sad, Mmayen signed the Adoption papers after it was read out aloud and interpreted to her in her mother tongue at the Supreme Court.
The Adoption fee which was given to her was enough to help her start a small business for herself and the 3 young children under her care. She wept but was consoled as the child was free to come visit her regularly besides Glory was still her blood.
Mr/Mrs Albert trained Glory through primary education to tertiary institution where she graduated with flying colors. Her foster parents and of course Mmayen her mum were super proud of her. She served her country for a year and came back to take over her dad's company. Mr Albert and his wife had actually willed 90% of their inheritance to her as their only child and 10% to the orphanage home here in Uyo.
Glory took drastic measures to bring her family together in unity, all who worked as house helps were ordered to quit. Glory then took it upon herself to train her younger ones through school afterall Education they say is the key🔑. She had built a bungalow for her mom and set up a business for her.
Glory will be getting married to a reputable young lawyer on 17th December 2022 and I can't wait to attend the wedding. @emmanu see free food ooo, come with your Ghana-must-go. The bride price along with the other numerous items has been paid to her father's kindred and it's shocking to know that the traditional marriage will be held in her hometown -a place where she was never to set her foot on.
