Securing a Place through Humility
We are in a generation that don't value humility anymore. We are such in a generation that do not give regard to people. The arrogance of heart has led many people astray just like a prodigal son in the Bible. If we are not careful, culture and value that we hold esteem will vanish in our sight. Humility is a virtue that must be learnt, and embraced. But may I tell you that humility is a great way of securing a place in life.
Someone may say how can humility secure a place for someone in life. How can humility open doors for people? I tell you, humility has opened doors for many people in life, and it is still opening doors for people.
Let me tell you this story. It's my experience and want to tell you as an evidence that humility can open doors for you.
Some years back when my brother and I were seeking for admission into the university I met a woman. I met her when trying to help someone get something from Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State Nigeria. It happened that some days before a Post UTME exam (An entrance exam into university in Nigeria) we would be having at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso, we received a call from our consultant (the person who helped us with UTME and post UTME process) that we would help him collect a document in Ibadan for a lady who will be doing the same exam in Ogbomoso.
We knew the lady, the lady is younger than we do. At first, we thought why will the consultant asked us to do this for someone who we are older than? But then we swallowed our egos and we agreed to go collect the document.
So, we left our hometown a day before the exam. I told my brother that he should go straight to Ogbomoso, the city where the school's entrance examination we are going for is located. While I went straight to Ibadan to go and collect the document as told.
On getting to Ibadan, I was delayed for some hours because the document was misplaced or something. The person who should give me the document couldn't locate the document on time. It's getting late, and I have to go to Ogbomoso that day because the entrance exam is by next day. Eventually, he saw the document and handed it over to me.
With so much joy in my heart I collected the form. However, I was skeptical about the journey because it's getting late and I had not been to Ibadan and Ogbomoso before. It was my first time. So, I collected the document and went straight to the nearby park. When I got to the park, I met just a bus and people have already entered. Sharply, I put my head inside and I sat down. I have not even rested my back and I heard a young beautiful lady say, "please this car has been booked". Meaning that the car is reserved and that I cannot go with it.
Gently, I stepped down from the car, and I was waiting if I would see another bus going to Ogbomoso. After a few minutes, I saw a woman entering the car I came down from. I didn't know what she discussed with her family who had already entered the car. I just heard her say, "gentle man", she called on me, and I answered and moved toward the bus. She said, where are you going? I said I am going to Ogbomoso. She said, the car is filled up as you can see. She then said, "Won't you mind sitting on my lap"? I thought in my mind, a grown up guy like me, sitting on a lap of a woman of about 50 years? What will people say? You are still a boy, they will say. As at then, I was about 2 decades. All those thoughts ran through my mind in a milliseconds, just like a speed of light.
Finally, I agreed to sit on her lap. The car took off and we left Ibadan for Ogbomoso. At a point, the woman asked me what I am going to do in Ogbomoso. I then told her that I am going to Ogbomoso for post UTME entrance exam. She was very happy to hear that. She told me that her daughter, the young lady that told me the car has been booked, is also going for entrance exam. From our conversation, I got to know that the family booked that car just to take the daughter to Ogbomoso and then sleep over at their family house in Ogbomoso.
Before we got to Ogbomoso, the woman gave me the numbers of two of his siblings working as staff of the university. She said I should give them my documents after my exam that they will help me in the admission process. To get admission into universities in Nigeria is not easy, especially if you don't know anyone or any staff. Even one's entrance mark above cutoff mark may not guaranteed admission.
To cut this story short, we did the entrance exam and I went to meet the woman's younger sibling and gave her our document. Eventually, the result of the exam came out and we passed above cut off mark. But then, when the first admission list came out, we were not in the list. We call the person and he assured us that we will see our names in the second list. We were very happy when the second list came out, but at the same time still skeptical because only my brother's name appeared in the list.
It now began to dawn on me... The last list that the school always release is often call senate list, and that list is not just for anyhow people. It is for some caliber of people. That is what a friend's brother who at the time doing his final year project in that school. I called the person who is helping us and he assured me that I will see my own name too in the last list. In all this process, I was informing the woman who connected us to her siblings. She told me not to worry, but to pray to God.
I prayed to God earnestly for miracle and God did it. I was very happy when I saw my name in the so called senate list. At that time, my brother has resumed 2 weeks with those who got admission in the first and second list.
Now, where am I driving at with this my long story? Humility! Humility is a quality that can get you a place in life. Had it been I was not humble enough to agree to sit on the woman lap, we may not get admission that year. What of our egos we swallowed to get a document for that young lady? Friends, humility pays! It pays to be humble. Even the Holy Bible says, "God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble". Please learn to be humble.
Thank you for reading my article.
I strongly believe with you that humility truly can open doors. Humility is one attribute God wants us to have because with it, growth is inevitable.
Thanks for sharing this beautiful thought.
Very correct!
Thank you for engaging. It is greatly appreciated.
Scripturally humility is indeed a virtue , in which I somewhat believe . That , everyone possess it . But big blow is that , pride often cast it all down . And turn those concern on relatively proud manners . Really learnt here . Thank for sharing.
You are very correct Sir. Many thanks for your well-thought contribution.
Hello Sir @msquaretwins good day to you how are you doing this afternoon?
Of a truth humility is a very good because if the bible also make us to understand that to the man that has pride, his downfall is close. And God exhaust the Humble.. In my life and I have been favoured many times because of my humility and it a very good character to emulate..
Thanks for sharing....
