I don't think there's a need to explain what a school is...I feel that each and everyone of us is likely to know what a school is.
There are two forms of schooling prevalent here in Nigeria:
Day schooling and Boarding schooling
In Day schooling, a student is allowed to go back home after the day's lessons. While in Boarding schooling, a student remains in school after the day's lessons and stays in an accommodation provided by the school commonly called a hostel.
They say, you get to read more and concentrate without being distracted by your parents and anyone else.
Busy parents prefer boarding schools as they get to go about their activities without distraction by their kids.
They say, boarding school teach you how to deal with life and gives you experiences.
And many more.....
Before I start, I'll first make it clear that even though I went through the day school route, I have relatives and friends who boarding schooled. So, I have an idea of how both works.
When it comes to better time management, I feel like day school helps you know how to manage your time well. While in boarding school, you're only expected to read and maybe some school works, day school gives you the opportunity to be able to balance school life with other activities. Besides the extra time left for boarding school students gives room for the seniors to bully the Juniors while at home, you get to do other interesting things.
Day school gives you that Quality time with family. It allows your parents know you and get to monitor and check your activities. They get to regulate your excesses and scold you when need be. After all, that's why they are there. But in boarding school, you hardly relate with your family, you're let loose and lack proper home training (in my opinion)
Day school provided a space for a safer health and mind for students. In day schools, you get to report a bully to your teachers and your parents at home. But while in boarding school, you can hardly get to talk with your parents and when you do, it's almost too late if not too late. Day school let's you have that safe space and mind of at least going home to cool off and rest but in Boarding school, you're always afraid that the bully might show up.
Honestly, I think boarding schools should be closed down because why not?
Even the name "hostel" makes me think of hostage.
From the many stories I've heard from boarding schoolers, bullying is almost becoming a norm.
Where you see seniors intimidating Juniors and punishing them for no just cause.
You cannot tell me that boarding students are proven to be more intelligent than day students because there are boarding schoolers who are just there to be there. Bottom line is, "a student who wants to learn will learn" no matter what form of schooling is done.
If a parent is too busy to take care of his/her kid, employ maids or get your relative to stay and help you. Though bad things happen anyway, but it's better to have someone who is accountable to you and it's a better option (in my opinion) than sending your kid to go train himself/herself Because that is literally what is being done.
In "Lord of the flies" by William Goulding, though the story used the boys as a symbol of the bad which is inherent in man, I feel this can be used literally in this context.
A group of kids who are left innocently without supervision will have to make their own decisions and laws which might turn out to be savage. A place where they are allowed to explore themselves with supervision is the best subscription and prescription.
