INTRODUCTION

What kind of room has no doors and windows?
A Mushroom.
Pretty much everyone loves eating them because of the unique taste and the flavor it adds to our regular diet. But should you really fancy a fungus?
Over the last few days,the market seemed to have an over load of mushrooms and I wonder,what do you really get from eating that umbrella-like stuff ?
This post is going to help us see some health benefits of eating mushroom. Read on

WHAT THEY ARE

Mushrooms are edible fungus which grows in moist areas above the ground level or on tree barks. They have been appreciated as food over thousand of years and also as medicine for traditional medicine practitioners due to its healing properties.

WHY EAT MUSHROOMS?

Mushrooms contain several important nutrients which are good for the human body. Some of them are;

1.SOURCE OF VITAMIN D
Vitamin D is very essential to the body. If not for any other thing,vitamin D helps to protect the bones,teeth and muscles making them strong and healthy.
Mushroom contains a substance called ergosterol similar in structure to cholesterol in animals. Ergosterol can be transferred to vitamin D with the exposure to Ultra Violet light. So when next you're picking mushrooms from your garden or wherever,make sure there is enough sunlight where it grows because your Vitamin D is sure.

  1. SERVES AS ANTIOXIDANTS
    Antioxidants are chemicals that helps the body to eliminate toxic byproducts of metabolism.Mushrooms contain a soluble fibre called Beta-glucan which helps to activate your immune system thereby increasing your body's ability to fight infection and even stop the growth of cells causing tumors or cancer causing cells
    They contain Vitamin B which aids in enzyme functionality of the body a and healthy cell metabolism and also a powerful antioxidant called Selenium which helps support the immune system and prevent damage to cells and tissues.

3.SOURCE OF FIBRE
Fibres aid in digestion. They help in good bowel movement,prevent or relieve constipation,helps waste to move smoothly through the body and can also help in weight loss. White mushroom in is an ideal source of low calorie dietary fibre. Other health benefits of mushrooms are;
*Helps lower cholesterol levels
*Helps to lower blood pressure levels
*Helps to prevent heat diseases etc.

ARE ALL MUSHROOM EDIBLE?

Not all mushroom are edible. Certain mushrooms are actually dangerous for the health. Some are known to cause hallucinations,sound and sight disturbances,as well as muscle weakness,drowsiness and nausea. Example is the Death Cap👇

This is the deadliest of all mushrooms,hence the name. It can cause death 6 to 12 hours of consumption following violent abdominal pain, vomiting,bloody diarrhea. Severe cases include lowering the blood sugar which can lead to coma and death.
