Germination

Germination simply means to grow. Germination in plants is the process by which seeds gradually develops roots and shoots after a period of dormancy (the period of inactivity of a seed.) For this to occur, the pericap (outer covering of the seed) has to be broken for the roots and new shoot to come out.
The root is send into the soil while the shoot comes up above the soil surface. Germination occurs in two ways.

1. Epigeal Germination, and;
2. Hypogeal Germination

Epigeal Germination is when a plant germinated and the seed leave or cotyledon remain in the soil. Examples of such plants are maize, rice, coconut, grasses, which have only one dead leaf (monocotyledon.)
Hypogeal Germination is when a plant grows and the seed leave (cotyledon) is carried above the surface of the soil. Some examples of plants which undergo hypogeal Germination are beans, cos pea, avocado pear, mango, groundnut, cashew, etc. They have two seed leaves or dicotyledons.

How Has Germination Helped Us?

• Germination has helped us to grow different cash crops, food crops, herbs and tree crops.
• It helps to to know and check seed dormancy. Germination helps a farmer to identify location of crops he planted.
• It helps to check weed growth on a farmland.
• It determines the continuous production of plants.
• Germination also helps farmers and scientists to know a fertile soil or know if the soil is suitable for such a plant.
• It helps to check seed dormancy period .

Some plants take longer periods to germinate while others germinate within 3-4 days of planting. Some seeds can take years before they germinate. Some factors affect this.

Factors Which Influence Seed Germination

• Climate condition
• Fertility of the soil
• Type of plant cultivated
• Structure of the soil
• Attack by pests
• Light
• Temperature
• Dormancy

These factors can either hinder the plant from germinating, or help the plant to grow well. If these factors are not favourable to the planted seed, the seed might die off or get eaten while it is still in the soil.

The best time for planting to achieve max germination of cultivated seeds is during the raining season when the first rain has fallen. Farmers have used this seasons to achieve high production of farm produce over the years.
