Introduction

It's evident to note that although mathematics a broad spectrum of course, mathematical sciences differs from it. Mathematics can be classified into two pure and applied sciences under which a broad array of branches exists. Under Pure mathematics we have courses like Algorithm, Algebra, Number theory etc while courses under Applied mathematics includes the following engineering, statistics, linear programming and so on.

However, Mathematical sciences can be defined exclusively as an area of specialization inclusive of mathematics and other academic courses that are mathematical in nature but not necessarily considered as a branch of mathematics in itself. Simply put, it is the mathematical study of mathematics and other related fields.

Science on the other hand, is a branch of knowledge which concerns itself with structure and movement of how the world is through experimental data and observations. It primarily involves; observation, identification, description, investigation through experiments, and explanation of natural occurrences. The basic objective of conducting a scientific research and experiment is to gain knowledge that can be used to solve everyday problem.

Branches of Mathematical sciences

There are various courses considered as Branches of Mathematical sciences and they are listed and some of them explained below;

  • Computer science
  • Computational science
  • Data science
  • Quantitative biology
  • Operations research
  • Control theory
  • Cryptology
  • Econometrics
  • Theoretical physics
  • Continuum mechanics
  • Mathematical chemistry
  • Actuarial science
  • Computer science

It is the area of study or the practical application of computation, automation, and information. It concerns itself with what and what not can be self-operated. The first form of computer automated mechanical calculated dates back to 1623 and was built by Wilhelm Schickard. As expected, it needed modification and so in 1673, Gottfried Leibniz who was then the first computer scientist revealed a digital calculator. The fundamental structure in which computer science is based is it's where it's applied.

  • Computational science

This can be seen as alike disciplines with computer science, however, it differs in its own way. It's a branch of Mathematical sciences that makes use of modern computational abilities to decode high form of problems. It covers other many disciplines, but concentrates mainly on the development of models and simulations to decode the existing environment. It is applied in areas like

  • Computational predictive science
  • Computational finance
  • Computational biology
  • Computational engineering
  • Data science

Data science is a field of study which makes use of scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to retrieve information from a uniformed data and it's application of knowledge from a wide spectrum scientific territory. Data science can relate data mining, machine learning and the person who is runs this programming language is known as a Data Scientist. They are usually in high demand in the modern day world as this era is a technological advancement era.

  • Quantitative biology

It is a general term surrounding a branch of mathematical techniques and it living organisms and life as a whole. The aim of quantitative biology is o create prognostic models based on generally acceptable concepts concerning living beings. Quantitative biology approaches include: Mathematical and theoretical biology, Computational biology, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Systems biology, Population biology, Synthetic biology, and Epidemiology.

  • Econometrics

This is the implementation of data techniques to economic statistics to provide first hand information to recent developments of economic theory and observations relationships. Econometrics has two founding fathers, one of which is Jan Tinbergen and the other is Ragnar Frisch. Ragnar Frisch took the liberty of coining it's present and world known name Econometrics.

Econometrics theory uses statistical theory and mathematical statistics to compare and create econometric methods which we all use today. The basic tool employed by the Econometrics theory is multiple linear regression model. It is also used for developing econometric models, analysing economic history, and forecasting.

Conclusion

Some colleges or universities offer degrees certificates in pure mathematical sciences such as the United States Military Academy, Stanford University, and University of Khartoum. These universities exists for individuals who love to further their education in mathematical sciences instead of pure or applied sciences. There's also a notable different in the two as explained in the post above.

Disclaimer: This post is in no where an advise to those seeking to further their education in science related subjects. It's advisable to make such decisions based on how one individually feels.
