I believe each exciting day has its definition and root. Today is a resting day, this is because of the Id el kabri additional holiday. Waking up this morning by 7 am, I never planned to go anywhere I just want to rest 🛌 today. Well, this was my initial plan but it happened that I changed the plan later.
By 10 am, after having my breakfast, I saw two of my students putting on their farm clothes and they said come let's go to the community farm. Then I answered them if today was the day to work on the community farm they said yes. Since I was free followed them to the farm. The funny 😄 part is that I don't if it's to plant or to spray chemicals (herbicide) on the weeds 🌿. All I knew was I'm going to the farm without a hoe or cutlass. It sounds funny 😄, right?
When we got to the farm then I knew the work. They have planted the millet and it has grown so today is for spraying of chemicals to kill the weeds 🌿. To be honest, I saw the largeness of the farm I shouted because haven't seen such a large farm.
Although I normally assist my mom to do farm work in this community (Kokodo, Kwara state, Nigeria🇳🇬) they are among communities in Nigeria that practice commercial agriculture 🚜. They cultivate rice, Beans(milk beans, brown, white beans, etc), millet, Guinea corn, melon🍈( watermelon 🍉 and Egusi(used for cooking)), maize, and so on. All these mentioned they cultivate them on large scale, this is their main source of revenue. So, because they work on a large-scale farm they kill weeds 🌿 by spraying chemicals on them.
Sorry,y I digress, when we reached the farm, some people who came so early started spraying. Then we joined them, remember I didn't come with anything and when my principals and other elderly men saw me they were amazed and they said thank you corper for coming. Then one of them said but corper where is your cutlass or spray can I laugh 😄 and said I don't even know it was spraying they all laughed 😄.
To be honest, one of the things that amazed me is their unity. The community is so united and they do things together with ease. This is my first time seeing this can kind of unity.
To assist them I borrowed a cutlass and was cutting down some strong weeds🌿. Going close to the river, I saw some workers weeding and I saw one of the plants 🍀 that look like grass then I asked what's this they said it is rice. Today, was my first time seeing what rice looks like we'll it may sound funny 😄 but that's the truth. We don't farm rice, beans, or millet what we do majorly in my community is cassava, yam, maize, three leave yam, cocoa yam and others.
I never knew to cultivate rice requires land close to a swamp or any water body. So, by noon, we rounded up the work and we all went home. I was so tired 😴 then I had some rest 🛌.
So, friends, this was how I spent half of my day. I'm so happy 😁 today and you can tell me the root of your extra happiness if you wish. Some people might ask why the extra? Well, to me, I'm always joyful regardless of the challenges. It might sound funny 😄 but that's how I trained myself. So, I hope you enjoyed how I spent half of my day.
