This is only the second contest, so I hope that more and more writers will join over time—not all of us are teachers, but all of us were once students.
I invite active members of our Ukrainian community to take part in this contest, especially @diodao, @cranium, @yetaras, @strecoza - we have all studied in school—so we all have stories to share.

This story happened in the ninth grade. At that time, not everyone had a calculator—I didn’t have one, even though I really wanted one. Computers weren’t even mentioned back then; maybe I didn’t even know they existed!

I wasn’t a straight-A student; I only received an achievement certificate in the first two grades. By the third grade, I probably struggled with math—I got a 4, I think? I’d have to find my report card to check (if it still exists, we used to collect them). I still remember those terrifying problems: scales, a watermelon, a pumpkin, and weights on them—I don’t know what exactly confused me, but something did.

I remember solving a geometry problem. I don’t recall the exact grade, but like most difficult problems, it involved a right triangle and the Pythagorean theorem. The numbers were large—so large that the sum of the squares of the legs "wouldn't fit" in a calculator. Calculators were rare then, and only top students or kids from wealthy families had them—those whose parents could "get" a calculator, a true symbol of prosperity!

If basic arithmetic, no matter how many digits, could still be done without a calculator using column method, extracting a square root without one was nearly impossible. The number ended up being more than 8 digits, and even if I found a calculator, it wouldn’t help since all calculators at the time had only 8-digit displays.

But I still managed to extract the square root and solve the problem. We had two top students in class with better grades than mine, yet they couldn't find the square root. The number ended in two zeros:

√ab=√a⋅√b

Of course, I don’t remember the exact number, but here’s an example of what it could have been:
For legs 6948 and 9264, we get:
6948² + 9264² = 134,096,400
The hypotenuse would be √134,096,400, but a calculator could only handle 8-digit numbers.

So I told the teacher, "You should give those top students a failing grade in algebra since they don’t know √ab=√a⋅√b." They probably knew the rule—after all, they were top students—but they knew it for algebra, while this was a geometry problem.

That was one tricky geometry problem—if only I could find it again! I remember the book, but which grade was it? 8th, 9th?

Rules and theorems should not only be memorized but also applied in practice.

Ця історія була класі в дев'ятому. До того ж така річ як калькулятор була не у всіх, у мене його наприклад не було. Хоч як я не мріяв. Про комп'ютери тоді і не згадували навіть. Можливо я й не знав про їх існування))
Я не був круглим відмінником, лиш перші два класи отримував відзнаку(грамоту). В третьому класі мабуть математику не витяг - 4, чи що - треба табель найти та глянути(якщо він десь є, а збирали ж) Як зараз пригадую моторошні тоді для мне задачі - терези кавун та гарбуз на них з гирьками, і вже не знаю що але щось мені там було не зрозуміло.
Пригадую розв'язував я задачу з геометрії. Який то був клас точно не пригадую, але задача як і більшість складних задач зводилася до прямокутного трикутника та теореми Піфагора. Числа там чомусь були великі, і такі великі що сума квадратів катетів "не влазила" в калькулятор. Калькулятори тоді були рідкість, і були або у відмінників, або у двієчників дітей крутих батьків - ті хто могли "дістати" калькулятор - чи й не предмет достатку))
І якщо звичайні арифметичні дії, скільки б там цифр не було можна обчислити без калькулятора, "в стовпчик" то добути корінь без калькулятора було неможливо. А число вийшло більше 8 цифр, і навіть якщо знайти калькулятор його не добути. А всі калькулятори були 8-розрядні, тобто на 8 десяткових цифр.
Але я таки корінь добув, і задачу розв'язав. А були в нас дві відмінниці, з оцінками кращими ніж у мене, то вони не змогли добути корінь
Число там закінчувалося на два нулі

√ab=√a⋅√b

Звісно яке там точно було число я не пам'ятаю, але ось я підібрав деякі які могли бути - при катетах 6948 9264 виходить: 6948² + 9264² = 134 096 400
Гіпотенуза вийде √134 096 400 - а калькулятор лиш 8 цифровий

я й кажу вчительці - "поставите отим відмінницям двійку з алгебри, за те що не знають √ab=√a⋅√b" , вони ж відмінниці, і правило то скоріш за все знали, але на алгебрі - а це ж у нас геометрія.

Така от була задачка з геометрії, - ех, найти б її... книжку то я знаю яка, а от який клас. 8,9

Правила та теореми треба не лише знати - а й вміти застосовувати на практиці.
