Sometime ago, while I was still a student, I heard that a student was rusticated from school due to examination malpractice. That she was caught with writings on her thighs. The entire school heard about it. Today, I get to discuss about Examination Malpractice.

What do you understand by examination malpractice?

Being that in every country, the primary way of assessing the skills and knowledge of a learner is through an examination. These examinations are taken in the primary level, secondary level and the tertiary institutions. The main challenge of a proper assessment is examination malpractice.

Examination malpractice is an act of deliberately doing something that is wrong. This is also known as cheating and students take this illegal steps during examination in order to cut corners and make good marks/grades.

Do you believe examination practice comes with consequences?, list them

Yes, of course examination malpractice comes with consequences. Examination malpractice has a wide range of consequences that is harmful to society and the individual.

• It has an impact that is negative on a student self-esteem, which causes guilt and insecurity feelings.
• Is a habit bad enough to break out from.
• There is an academic sanction for examination malpractice like; suspension, failing of grades, expulsion, suspension, repercussions, loss of reputation and integrity loss.

Have you ever engaged in this practice, or do you know someone (a student) who engaged in this?

I have not engaged in this examination malpractice before. I rather give out what I've learnt and read than give my self-esteem away due to examination malpractice. And yes, like I said earlier I know someone that engaged in it but I don't have a personal relationship with the lady.

I also heard some of the students in examination hall talk to themselves even after being warned. I'm too scared of engaging in it as I've got strict parents and I won't let them down by engaging in such.

List different ways people Chetan in exams and the cause of this

There are set of standards that examinations are designed to undergo. Once those standard are breached, that's different forms of malpractice. Here are ways cheating occurs during examination;

• Giraffing: just as a giraffe has long neck to view things from far, that is how a student cranes his/her neck to view the scripts of another student and copy from there.
• Inscription: most times a student uses his/her body to inscribe notes on it. Body parts like the thighs, palms, hands are being used. Also, materials are used to inscribe notes, on it ranges from; small pieces of paper, tables, the walls of examination hall, inside of their shoes, etc.
• Collision: Here, a student collides with an examination officer who allows him/her to have a copy of the questions in advance for the student to revise the questions and keep the answers admits the examination day. This results in exams leakage.
• Impersonation: this is an act of one pretending to be a student siting for the examination with the aim of helping the student cheat and pass.
• External assistance: here, an exams officer receives bribe from students in exchange for help. It can be before the examinations, during or after the examinations, sometimes and exams officer threatens students and that is forcing a bribe.

• Intimidation/assault: students can sometimes assault or intimidate the invigilating offices. It can be that the students uses a weapon or other ways of assaults. Therefore the officer is being forced to allow the student to do their will.

The cause of this examination malpractice is just to aim good grades and pass promotional examination to move to another level.

What are ways to curtail the increase in exams malpractice?

• Use of Computer Assisted Learning(CAL) due to this area of technology. Students being taught digitally will become effective learners and independence of themselves. The use of electronic devices through PowerPoint presentation has captured the minds of students in this century thereby adding the use of CAL.
• Effective supervision and monitoring of teaching and learning. There should be regular check on notes of lessons to ensure that the scheme of work is followed and covered over a period of time.
• Electronic examination and testing using technology assisted gadgets in learning and teaching is good to curtail examination malpractice.
