SLC | S22W5 : Teachers as examples and role models
Hello my lovely steemians, I'm thrilled to participate in this week teachers and students learning challenge, the class was impactful and I'm expected to detail my understanding in respect to the class content.
Below is a detailed response for each assignment task based on my experience and knowledge. Here I have elaborated on each task to provide a comprehensive and thoughtful reflection in them. Let's read below...
Task | 1: |
After understanding the course material, explain why teachers need to be examples and role models for students, and how much influence does this have on student behavior and character?
Answer | ... |
Teachers play a vital role in shaping the minds and characters of their students, the idea of a teacher being an example or role model goes beyond simply just delivering lessons, a teachers influence extends to their personality, behaviors and the values they uphold all of which significantly impact student behavior and character development.
Teachers are mostly the first figures of authority that students encounter outside of their homes, so for that they become important in shaping students views on the world, on relationships and even on personal conduct or behaviours.
In the our class the teacher @miftahulrizky used the the concept of “Guru digugu dan ditiru” which means (teachers should be trusted and emulated) from the Javanese culture speaks volumes about the high expectations society has for teachers to illiterate good why teachers should model.
A teachers actions and words set a precedent for students who tend to mirror those behaviors,
Now for example, if a teacher consistently demonstrates fairness and respect students are more likely to adopt these qualities by themselves.
if a teacher behaves in a dismissive or unfair manner students may follow the same, perceiving such actions as acceptable behavior since they expect everything to be good about their teacher, a teachers conduct therefore, is not only a reflection of their own character but also a guide to students in navigating the social and academic areas.
The influence of teachers on students behavior cannot be overstated, because teachers are to instill values like honesty, responsibility, discipline, empathy and respect which form and shape student character. It always show sense of good model when students see their teachers modeling these virtues in their everyday interactions and they begin to practice these values which makes it part of their own behavior.
Now let me give another example, a teacher who demonstrates patience when explaining difficult topii helps his or her students to develop the same patience in their learning process, Likewise a teacher who consistently shows empathy towards struggling students encourages a behavior of understanding and kindness in the classroom.
By being role models teachers are indirectly teaching students how to manage emotions, resolve problems and build positive relationships
On the other hand negative behaviors exhibited by teachers like impatience, lack of empathy or disrespect can have detrimental effects on student behavior, these behaviors may lead students to replicate similar attitudes and actions and create a disruptive or toxic classroom environment for students.
Task | 2: |
Each teacher has a different character and personality, named as many negative behaviors that you are aware of in yourself while teaching.
Answer | ... |
Even when I have been always striving to be a good teacher, I am aware of certain negative behaviors that I exhibited during my brief teaching period when I was assigned as a student teacher in a secondary school, now reflecting on these behaviors has helped me understand areas where I need to improve to be a better role model for my students.
One of the challenges I faced during my teaching practice was poor time management, where I found myself often rushing through lessons or extending the time allocated for certain topic to be treated which disrupted the flow of the class.
Meanwhile students depend on a structured timetable to guide their learning and by not adhering to it, I inadvertently created a bad behavior and environment that hindered their ability to focus and engage in my class.
Another issue I noticed was my inconsistent approach to discipline, at times I was lenient with students who misbehaved in my class which created confusion about the boundaries within the classroom.
At other times I was overly strict which lead to feelings of resentment and fear among my students, Inconsistent discipline can undermine a teacher authority and make students uncertain about expectations, to establish clear and consistent boundaries is very important for maintaining order and respect in the classroom.
I also lacked in providing feedbacks, providing meaningful feedback is important for students growth but I often struggled to provide the level of feedback needed, I tended to focus more on the content and less on the process which left students with little understanding of how they could have improve.
Feedback is not only about pointing out mistakes but also about providing guidance on how to correct them and to offer positive reinforcement when students perform well and excel
At times I exhibited disrespect toward my students, especially when I was frustrated and stressed up, I strongly believe I may have used a harsh tone or dismissed their questions without giving them the attention they need due to that.
As a teacher it is important to always maintain respect for your students regardless of the situation, disrespect can damage the teacher and student relationship and do away trust.
Punctuality is a key aspect of any professionalism and I struggled with being on time for classes, when I was late it not only disrupted the schedule but also set a poor example for my students.
Students are supposed to learn the importance of being punctual and as a teacher, I must model this behavior consistently.
Those negative behaviors were certainly my challenges and they have given me valuable insights into areas for improvement, I am actively working to become more disciplined with my time management, provide more constructive feedback, maintain respect for all students and be punctual and consistent in my approach to teaching.
Task | 3: |
Share with us examples of positive attitudes or exemplary behaviors that you have implemented in your daily life with students? What educational values are contained in these behaviors.
Answer | ... |
Despite the challenges I faced I also worked hard to cultivate positive behaviors in my teaching practice, These positive behaviors have not only benefited my students but have also helped me grow as a professional teacher.
One of the most important qualities I strived to demonstrate was empathy, I made a conscious effort to understand my students perspectives and challenges, whether it was offering extra help to struggling students or listening to their concerns about their personal issues, I tried to show that I cared about their well being first. Of course if a student is not in a good situation they won't have the ability to aquire my knowledge, so I prioritized empty.
Empathy also builds trust and rapport which are essential for effective teaching and learning.
Patience is another virtue I worked to cultivate, teaching can be challenging most especially when students are struggling to grasp the topic you re teaching, I made sure to remain patient and take time to explain ideas in different ways until all students understood me.
This patient approach allowed students to feel comfortable asking questions and seeking help without fear of judgment in my class, which I'm always satisfied with that.
Beyond simply teaching content I took on the role of a mentor, I tried to guide my students not only in academics but also in real life skills. I encouraged them to pursue their passions and make responsible decisions and be leaders in their own areas of interest.
Mentoring goes beyond the classroom as it is about helping students to develop into confident capable people.
I made an effort to provide clear and concise instructions to my students, When teaching complex topics I broke down information into manageable chunks and used various teaching aids such as visual aids like videos and real life examples to clarify difficult topics s.
Clear instructions helped reduce confusion and create a more organized and effective learning environment for my students
Lastly, I worked on maintaining positive body language through Smiling, making eye contact and using an open posture helped me connect with my students and create a welcoming presence. positive body language communicates confidence and warmth which makes students feel valued and respected.
Now, through these behaviors I aimed to create an environment that was supportive, engaging and conducive to learn with my lovely students. I truly believe these attitudes helped foster a sense of community and trust among my students.
Task | 4: |
What benefits do you feel from the exemplary behavior you have shown so far, has it had a positive impact on the behavior and character of your students?
Answer | ... |
The benefits of demonstrating exemplary behavior have been evident in both my personal growth and in the development of my students, by embodying qualities such as empathy, patience and respect, I have noticed several positive outcomes as I'll state below.
When students see their teacher genuinely caring about their success, they are more likely to engage actively in class, the empathy I showed helped students feel comfortable participating and asking questions and expressing their opinions without any fear of ridicule.
As a result for that, classroom discussions became more lively and productive making my class more interactive.
Patience and clear instructions helped students grasp difficult topics even more easily, by breaking down lessons into smaller digestible pieces and giving them time to ask questions my students were able to understand and apply the material even more effectively.
This effort not only improved their academic performance but also increased their confidence in their abilities as well
The positive behaviors I implemented helped strengthen the bond between my students and me, When students feel respected and valued they are more likely to trust their teacher and open up about their concerns and secret problem and challenge.
This trust is essential for creating a positive learning environment where students feel safe to take risks and explore new ideas
Finally, by modeling good behavior I contributed to the development of important character traits in my students, they began to adopt values such as honesty, responsibility and empathy, which will benefit them in all areas of their life.
As a teacher my actions were a direct influence on their social and emotional growth which helped them become well rounded individuals
In concluding my and points and experience I will say that being a teacher is not just about imparting knowledge alone but it is about being a role model and guiding students toward becoming responsible, empathetic and successful individuals in their different areas.
By reflecting on both my positive and negative behaviors I can continuously improve and become a better educator who inspires students not only academically but also in their character and personal development as well.
Through consistent self reflection and dedication to personal growth I can foster an environment that nurtures the ability of every student I come across
I won't learn alone so therefore I'll invite @goodybest, @suboohi and @fantvwiki my friends to participate in this wonderful learning challenge, I'll be looking forward to reading your entry friends.
