SLC | S22W5 : Teachers as examples and role models
Hello Friends. How're you doing?. This is another week to learn and have fun. I will be attempting this contest on "Teachers as examples and Role Models"
After understanding the course material, explain why teachers need to be examples and role models for students, and how much influence does this have on student behavior and character?
A teacher Is a person who has the responsibility of inculcating morals, skills and give information to a set of person a whether In a formal setting or informal setting.
According to Williams Shakespeare, he described teachers as the ones who get the most out of the least ability. This quote explains the role of teachers in bringing out the best in their students regardless of their abilities
Teachers need to be examples and role models for their students. This is because students learn directly from their teachers through observations. A student learns from what the teacher says, but learn more from what the teacher does. The behavioural pattern, attitude and values of a teacher gradually robs on and is absorbed by the student. A teacher should be a good example because they play a very huge role in shaping the character and values of their students. According to @miftahulrizky
Thus, the teacher's task is not only limited to transferring knowledge to students, but also plays an important role in shaping student character, especially in the affective aspect
According to Indonesia, the term teacher means "Guru" which is a combination of 2 words, Ddgugu and dituru. Digugu which means a teacher can he trusted and dituru which means a teacher can be used as an example or a role model
Each teacher has a different character and personality, name as many negative behaviors that you are aware of in yourself while teaching.
Every teacher has unique character and personality. These characters can be good/positive or bad/negative. A teacher's character will be absorbed by the students whether negative or positive
Some negative cahracters of teachers are
•Lack of preparation: On few occasions, I have shown up in class without proper preparation. This can make my teaching disorganized as I will lack quality words and explanations to pass my intention or topic across to my students
•Unprofessional Ethics: some times I don't follow my professional rules. I might be on my phone when it is supposed to be a teacher - student bonding time or might go out to the cafeteria to get a drink when it isn't yet break or recess
• Favoritism: I don't do this, but I have witnessed so many teachers do this to their students. Favouritism in this contest is always defending, loving, or paying more attention to a particular set of students more than the others maybe because of race, tribe, skin color or financial status. When this is done, the other students will feel left out, poor in their self esteem and will not be able to perform well
•Unprofessional Appearance: Some teachers dress inappropriately to work. This will cause a negative impact on the children because these children are very observant and trust that whatever their teacher does is the best and should be followed. Unprofessional appearance can be in form of wearing of skimpy dress, gross tattoo, use unprofessional hair dye etc.
Share with us examples of positive attitudes or exemplary behaviors that you have implemented in your daily life with students? What educational values are contained in these behaviors.
Some examples of positive attitude I have implemented on my daily life with students and how it benefits the students are
• Active Listening: I give my students utmost attention during classes, maintain eye contacts with all of them as much as possible and also ask questions to allow them express themselves and particulate in the learning. This attitude will communicate a sense of belonging to them. It is called socal emotional learning and it is very essential for academic performance
•Sharing: A good teacher is one who freely shares all she has, be it knowledge or material things. I share with my students, could be a snack or a drink. This attitude has also made them start sharing with their follow students. They can now freely share their lunch, pencils and every other learning aid with their classmates an friends
•Being Approachable: I make myself available for my students at all times. I don't want to be seen as just a teacher, I also want to be seen as a friend to them. This attitude boost students participation in class, love to learn and their self confidence
•Use of positive Languages: Children are very observant and absorbent so I consciously use positive words on them. Instead of saying, "you failed", I will say "Try your best next time" or "Add more effort". This will trigger their self confidence instead of reducing it
What benefits do you feel from the exemplary behavior you have shown so far, has it had a positive impact on the behavior and character of your students?
I have seen so many benefits from my exemplary behavior as a teacher. I have benefitted from it and also my students have

•Job satisfaction: The level of satisfaction I get from my job has increased exponentially
•Strengthen Relationship: The relationship I have with my students and their families are now strengthened leading to a more supportive community
Benefits To Students
•Improved behavior and Character: The students have noticed an improvement or a positive change in their character and behavior. They are now more responsible, disciplined and respectful
•Increased motivation and Engagement: Through the teacher's positive role modelling, the students are now motivated to learn and engage in educational activities
•Better Social Skills: students have learnt useful social skills like effective communication, team work, leadership skill, conflict resolution through observing and following the teacher
In summary, a teacher's role in a student's life and community at large cannot be overemphasized. Good teachers will produce good students, but bad teachers will produce bad students
