Not many weeks ago I walked along the seafront here in Kristiansand. The sand art is in place this year too. Every year Kristiansand municipality invites artists to create these sculptures in an area called Gravane. The artists usually come to town in the summer and the sand art are finished in the month of June to the delight of the local population and tourists.

«Watch what you think»

«Show me your good side(s)»

These are the two new sculptures in 2023. The sculptures are made in the same place every year, but by different artists. I read in the local paper that approximately 250 tons of sand arrive and artists can let loose and use their imagination in combination with water and sand. I imagine that the feeling of playing with sand, almost feels like when children sit in a sandbox and build figures and sandcastles. The principle is the same. Wet sand is patted until you have the shape or figure you want.

The signature of Elisabeth Kristensen

One of the artists who has often contributed with her art is called Elisabeth Kristensen. She is a sand sculptor, but also a project manager here in Kristiansand. The two sculptures on the photos above was done by here in 2020.

On the oposite side. Also done by E.Kristensen in 2020

I have often wondered how the figures can stand for several weeks and withstand both rain and sun. But in the local newspaper I got a good explanation. They are sprayed with a mixture of water and glue after they are completely finished. Although in this way they are protected from the weather and wind, they still have to be destroyed at the end of the summer. Everyone who might be in town during the summer month mostly probably will walk along «Strandpromedaden» in in this way get a chance to admire the sand art.

Guaooo... Not all have this particular and unique talent to create sculptures made with this material like the sand, which is bringing the advantage to be easily manipulated by adding the correct quantity of water in order to moisture it.

They are indeed talented these artist. I think this must be a difficult task to create huge sculptures like this out of only sand and water! even with the right qauntity. All us locals do admire these works. Allways exciting to see what the themes are.

I would be very excited to see this in live action because it's really hard to find sand artists around there. ⌛ 🙂

I wish I had seen some of the artists in action, but somehow I don't manage to be on the spot when they start working. I should very much like to see how the do it. It's a huge pile of sand that they work with. The final products are always amaxing :)

We're both agree on this. 🙂 With an opportunity like this one, can't be missing it no matter what... Well, depends. 😁

I'm glad to hear that the sand art in Kristiansand is a popular attraction enjoyed by both locals and tourists. It must be exciting to see talented artists showcasing their skills and creating stunning sculptures. The annual tradition in Gravane sounds like a great way to celebrate art and culture in the community.

It is popular and most of us will walk down to Gravane to have a look. Gravane is located in the city center, so it's easy to take a stroll in the lunch break for everyone working in town. I do think these sculptures are almost as popular as the street art in town :)
