Endless | 5-Minute Freewrite | Prompt: Round Glasses
This is my 5-minute freewrite, thanks for the prompt @mariannewest!
Jim looked into the dim shop window. He couldn't see much behind the dusty glass, a few odd shapes, but nothing recognizable. Jim glanced back up at the sign hanging above the single door into the shop. It read: Q.A.O.I.O.W.K.W O, and beneath that; A Place you'll never forget! He read it a few times to try to understand it. The acronym, he could not even fathom what it stood for. And why was the word 'Place' uppercased? Creepy.
But, the letter from his parents told him to go here, right at the corner of Limestone and 89th Street. So, pushing down his qualms of fear, pushed open the unlocked door.
Inside was dark, so he gropped around for a light switch on either side of the door. He found one and flipped it, and saw that he was in a small room that had some muddy boots and gardening equipment. There was no garden or park for atleast fifty miles in any direction. The switch Jim's hand was still on was an old-fashioned one, with a round face-plate. Upon seeing a spider web with a nasty little spider way too close to his hand, he pulled his hand back and walked toward a door, opposite the one he walked through.
It creeked open and, a relief to his nerves, the lights were on in this place. Shelves upon shelves filled it, with a tall ceiling above them. Dusty objects decorated the shelves, the oddest things he had ever seen. Knobs and tubes as well as cogs and little buttons, all the way to what looked like a lawn mower, but slightly glowing with no wheels. He went to the intesection ahead of him and saw that rows and rows of towering shelves went on until he couldn't see the end.
Jim saw that there was a break in the rows, and he walked to it, and found a checkout desk, almost like one from a library. Behind it sat an older man with a long nose and round glasses, his fingers steepled. "Ah, you must be James Williamson."
"Uh, no, that's not my last name." His insides were racing, how did an old man in some store know who he was? Did he know his parents?
"Your father's name was William, was it not? And that would make you William's son, would it not?" Jim didn't answer, not liking this guy one bit. His tight grin was disturbing. "I can show you many things, including what happened to your parents."
Thanks for reading.
Oh -I hope that you continue this story. I want to know!
And just reading this I think I will never forget this place :)
Yes, I was thinking about a mystery series of sorts. I was inspired by the Lola series by @freedomtowrite.
Lola is a great inspiration! Looking forward to what you will write.
