GENERAL LEARNING TIPS
Re-orientation Towards Learning
The Bargain to Learn
(a) Personal Resolution:
An ambitious student has a serious academic assignments to pursue. While persuasion and ‘force’ may be harnessed to teach the pupils in our primary schools, secondary school students are believed to be mentally mature hence capable of taking certain decisions. One of such decisions is the decision to learn. On this note, it is not impertinent for parents to ask their wards whether or not they have resolved to learn. If the answer is “yes”, then the parents should drum it into their ears that there are no two ways about it; but that reading is the pivot of learning. Parents can then direct their wards to note:-
(i) That the decision to learn connotes a resolution which further implies personal study vow:
(ii) That it pre-supposes voluntary but sincere commitment:
(iii) That the students should first declare that span of their studentship as a tenure of committed learning.
(iv) That they should have sympathy for their parents and empathy for themselves because while they may disappoint their parents through failures, the same frustrate them.
They should be directed to note that certificates make the born-great greater, the orphans, the motherless or the fatherless: ‘comforted’ ; the business men visionarily successful; the urgly girls: ‘beautiful’, its absence makes the inane paragons of beauty ‘urgly’. Education is the only ‘wealth’ that overpowers money.
Therefore students' resolution to learn must be sincere and total.
