Weekly Reflections #31: Lessons from my Profession | "Being a salesman "
What is my profession? When we talk of professions, I know we have numerous ones to think of. We have specialists here who are doctors, nurses, electricians, architects, entrepreneurs, gym instructors, online tutors, and so on. We all do these things to earn a living.
Now I want to talk about myself. Remember, my first statement was: What's my profession? Let me take you through the world of the salesman or sales personnel. I will also share what we can learn from this profession and some of the do and do not concerning this profession.
I work as a salesman in a store in Lagos. I decided to take the job after I finished secondary school to help my family with bills. At least here I can take care of myself and send some of myself to my family. My duties as a salesman include selling our products, keeping records of what is sold, keeping records of what is bought at the store, and, lastly, taking good care of their goods in the store. One thing about a salesman is that you need to be a social person, with the ability to interact freely with people or customers. You know why. Because sometimes some customers will frustrate you. I experienced it several times...or should I share one occasion?
One faithful day, I shaded or arranged our goods as usual, and a customer came to buy his desired goods. After negotiating the price, he preferred to pay through transfer. So I gave him the account number. After he did the transaction, we wanted to leave immediately as I did not confirm it from my boss. In the next few minutes, he started a drama.... Shouting that he cannot wait and threatens to leave the market.
Won't I confirm the transaction before I let him go? Why are some customers so frustrated? Sometimes I do not blame them because the price of goods can change at any time, and your budget is different from what you got in the market. I understand the fact that inflation has affected the cost of living, leaving everyone out of frustration. Working as a salesperson can vary depending on the kind of business because some people have holidays during the weekend, which I do not. I work every day, from Monday to Sunday though the salary is just a penny. Sometimes, I use the time that I am supposed to rest and relax to create content and engage on time as they will not allow me to use the phone during working hours.
Now what do I have to say about those who might consider taking sales personnel as their profession.
You must know how to deal with your competitors. Does it really matter......you might see it as nothing until when you have a competitor who manages to take away your customers from you?
Learn to do market analysis: Employers always like to work with someone who is updated on the market price. Through market analysis, you will be able to know when the price is increasing or decreasing.
Learn to communicate freely: a customer like someone is social. Sometimes the smile when greeting them may attract them to patronize you and refer people to you.
Be honest with your work: This has to do with your personal self as the more honest you are, the more you will gain trust and respect from your employer.
Be Accountable: always make sure to keep records of everything in the store. Like me, I have a record book where I record:
- The Goods bought to the shop
- The goods sold out.
At the end of the month, we always do stock-taking (taking into account the total of what we bought of what we sold). After the calculation, we know some of the products that are selling rapidly and the ones we need to buy more.
In any profession, you've to learned to be someone they can rely on, someone they can trust, so sociable, honest, be hardworking. This is a little I had to share with you today. I believe you learned something from my profession. Thank you for reading.
