Indigenous Languages and Oral Traditions’ Preservation.

in STEEM FOR BETTERLIFE13 days ago

Hello Steemians, welcome to my post. I am excited to participate in this challenge which I have talked about "SHOCKING MOMENTS"

What is your indigenous language, is it your country's official language, and can your kids speak the language?

English language is the indigenous language, of my country Nigeria. However, besides English, and the pidgin languages which are the two indigenous languages we have in Nigeria, there are also other languages spoken in Nigeria which are; Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, Efik, TV and others. The language I am coming from is Bendi Language which is the indigenous language of my village, bekwarra.

For now, I haven't married but by the time I get married and give birth, I will make sure my kids speak the English language very well followed by the Bendi Language which is the native language of my village. The English language is been taught in schools and I would want my children to know how to speak the English language perfectly.

What are some of your country's traditions and how do you preserve them orally?

There are many traditions in Nigeria that I preserve orally both in my family and outside. In Nigeria, it is a law for a child to respect his or her parents and those who are his or her senior. Also, the tying of wrappers is for ladies and not for men.

Cola nut is very important in a house and is used to welcome guests into your house. Other traditions are marriage in Nigeria are categorized into three such traditional, court, and church weddings. Palm wine is very important during any traditional event.

In conclusion, respecting elders, studying hard to become a useful person, speaking the truth, being punctual at a place, and avoiding stealing are also, traditions that I do preserve orally.

I just learned about your language for the first time, it's good that you will teach your kids your native language when you have one. Do you see that tying of the wrapper? It's my thing haha 😂😆, in fact, I only used it during my traditional marriage ceremony, and since then I haven't tried it again. Thanks for sharing with us.
