Lalon Fakir was simultaneously a spiritual Baul devotee, humanist, social reformer and philosopher. A rare human philosophy can be found in his songs.Lalon Shah, also known as Lalon Fakir or Lalon Sai, is still alive 129 years after his death. There was no manuscript of the songs written by him, but the songs composed by him in the spirit of rural Bengal spread in the mouths of the people.The time when Lalon Fakir was born was a turning point in the life of a Bengali. At the battle of Palashi, the sun of independence was setting. Rural society is divided in many ways. There were various problems in the society regarding religion, caste etc.Lalon fought against these castes and religions. He wanted to build a casteless religion and casteless society. He placed humanism above all else.

Vaishnava Sahajia, Buddhist Sahajia and Sufism in combination with Manabguru's bhajan, body-centered sadhana is the main mantra of Baul religion.lalon Fakir believed that a 'man of mind' lived among all people. And people with that mind can be found through self-realization. Inside the body lives the man of the mind or what he calls the 'unknown bird'.Fakir Lalon Shah was a man of many talents. Also known as Fakir Lalon, Lalon Sai, Lalon Shah, Mahatma Lalon etc. He is also a spiritual Baul devotee, humanist, social reformer and philosopher. He was the lyricist, composer and singer of many songs. Lalon is considered to be one of the pioneers of Baul music and is also referred to as the 'Baul-Emperor'. It was through his songs that Baul music gained immense popularity in the nineteenth century.

Lalon Shah died on 16 October 1890 at the age of 116 in his stables at Chheuriya, Kumarkhali, Kushtia. About a month before his death, he was suffering from stomach problems and glandular problems. When he was sick he did not eat anything except milk. At that time he wanted to eat fish. He sang until 5 a.m. on the day of his death, and at one point told his disciples, "I went," and he died shortly thereafter.Due to his lack of instruction or will, neither Hindu nor Muslim religious observances were observed after his death. According to his advice, his tomb was built inside a room in his stable in Chheuria. Even today, Bauls from all over Bangladesh and West Bengal gather at Chheuria in October to pay their respects to Lalon. Twelve days after his death, he was first referred to as 'Mahatma' in an article published in the then fortnightly magazine Mir Mosharraf Hossain's Hitkari.
