Lord Byron was a British poet, politician, and a leading figure of the Romantic movement in literature. He was born George Gordon Byron on January 22, 1788, in London, England. Byron's father was a captain in the British army, and his mother was a Scottish heiress. They were both distant and cold, and Byron was raised primarily by his mother, who instilled in him a love of literature and a sense of superiority.

As a child, Byron suffered from a deformity in his right foot, which caused him great physical and emotional pain. He was also sexually abused by his nursemaid, which left him with deep emotional scars. Despite these challenges, Byron excelled in his studies and developed a love for poetry and the classics.

In 1805, Byron inherited his family's title and estates, including Newstead Abbey, a sprawling estate in Nottinghamshire. He enrolled at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he quickly gained a reputation as a brilliant but reckless student. He became involved in several scandals, including a public drunkenness incident and a scandalous affair with a married woman.

Byron's career took off in 1812 with the publication of Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, a long narrative poem that follows the travels and adventures of a young man named Harold. The poem was an immediate sensation, and Byron became famous overnight. He followed up with several more successful works, including The Giaour, The Bride of Abydos, and Lara.

Despite his literary success, Byron was known for his scandalous personal life. He had a string of affairs with both men and women, including his half-sister Augusta Leigh. He also engaged in various forms of debauchery, including drinking, gambling, and wild parties. In 1816, he famously left England and traveled to Switzerland, where he lived with Percy Bysshe Shelley and his wife Mary Shelley. It was during this time that Byron wrote one of his most famous works, the epic poem Don Juan.

Despite his controversial personal life, Byron remains one of the most celebrated poets in English literature. His works continue to be studied and admired for their wit, passion, and romanticism.
