Is there age anxiety in your country?
The truth here is that age is not constant; we are ageing, and that is one thing you can't stagnate. No matter how you try to beautify yourself for the ladies or wear a slim-fit cloth for the guys, the truth will eventually reveal itself. I am ageing, and I cannot change that.
Have you heard of the Declaration of Age? It is very rampant in my country; even if people declare age, those whom the country's policies may not affect will still have to declare themselves younger because they are afraid of what may happen in the future.
I haven't declared my age, but at some point, I felt I should have done so because of the several delays I encountered in getting admission into the university. I had a cut-off mark that would have put me in another department, but I aimed at obtaining admission into the faculty of clinical science to study medicine and surgery. After 2 years of failure while attempting, I knew I was not getting any younger. The reason is that I knew the course I am going to study is not a 4-year course, and if I don't get admission, I may end up not meeting certain achievements.
In my country, when you are an hour above 30 years old, you will not be eligible for the National Youth Service Corps program as a fresh-baked graduate. Most of us aim at this because wearing the kaki is very important; it gives you so much pride. Many can't afford to lose and can't let age stop them, so they strive and strive harder to make sure age will not be a limiting factor.
Medicine and surgery are 6 years in my country; sometimes it elongates to 7 years because of the strike. I have heard of people who graduated after 8 years, so if this is the case, you should be aiming at being in medical school at age 20, so that whatever the case may be, you will go for NYSC and wear the kaki. However, I think the rule has been waved off for medical students because of the weight of stress they seem to encounter in getting into the school and getting out.
For other courses, don't you dare enter the university at age 27 unless you don't have an interest in going for NYSC and enjoy bountiful benefits from the government?
For this reason, people lie about their age; they even go the extra mile to swear before the court about their real fake age. I heard you are wrong if you ask a lady of her age in most countries, why is it wrong?, age anxiety I think.
There is a part in the LIL WAYNE song that says, "I wanna be forever young.". Many people don't want to age. Initially we were not supposed to age, but things change for humanity from Adams. Imagine the government setting the age of 35 as the period you can get a job. Most people who are 30 will still declare their age to be 25, so probably if they don't get a job in 5 years it won't affect anything. It's hard to get a government job in my country. No connection, no job. People put their relatives in position before thinking of anyone else. That is the same thing the man at the pool complained to Jesus.
How do you deal with this issue?
This is another big question. I would say the best way to handle this is to do things on time and at the right time, meaning at a proper age, but the fear of this and people's previous experiences will still move them. When trying to do things on time, circumstances beyond our control may spring in and leave us with no option but to follow the trend. I am not in medical school because of this same thing, "circumstances beyond our control." I am in a new department, and even if I want to study another course of 4 years, I will still be eligible for NYSC, but some may not, so the right time is the best.
I would love to read @goodybest @miftahulrizky and @alegnita take on this
