"Your country's special day of remembrance?"
Introduction |
---|
Counties remembrance day reminds the people (citizens) about significant events that took place in the country, which bring back a good memory of what happened. In my country, we have days set aside for remembrance. These are Independence Day and Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
Remembrance Day in my Country |
---|
The two days are usually days that come with deep feelings of joy and celebration, especially as Nigeria gained independence from the British, which is usually celebrated on 1st October every year. This is usually a very big celebration, but I want to dwell on Armed Forces Remembrance Day, which is usually not given too much relevance, like Independence Day in my country. Although both are usually remembered and celebrated, Independence Day is usually a big event.
On the other hand, the Armed Forces Remembrance Day is usually that of sad and solemn events as the event is usually meant to remember those fallen heroes who fought in the country's civil war from 1966-1970. These people fought endlessly to keep the unity of Nigeria, preventing the separation of Nigeria.
Not just that, that day is usually set aside to celebrate and remember service men who died while on active service to the nation and those soldiers who died fighting in World War II, 1939-1945.
When I was a little girl in the basic school, I usually wondered why dead people would be remembered. I usually asked many questions as to why they should talk about people who fought wars. I really came to a full understanding of the day and its events when I was at the higher institution as I studied history, which had exposed me to events and happenings in Nigeria and all over the world.
However, Armed Forces Remembrance Day is usually 15th January. It's usually celebrated with some certain events like the following:
The laying of a wreath on the cenotaph by government officials and loved ones of slain soldiers. This is usually carried out from the national level (Federal), the state and by every local government in Nigeria.
Military parade in honour of the slain soldiers and the recognition of old service men who are still alive.
It's usually a big day, although not usually declared a public holiday in the country.
