Frost Crystals............. NW Cascade Wanderings
One of my favorite things to photograph next to ‘shrooms, would be frost encrusted leaves and grasses.
I was suspecting that no two ice crystals are the same-just like snowflakes, so I asked ChatGBT and this is what it said:
Frost crystals are different and unique! Their shapes and patterns are influenced by a variety of environmental factors. Here’s why they differ:
Temperature
•At lower temperatures, crystals tend to grow smaller and more intricate.
•Slightly higher temperatures allow for larger, less detailed crystals.Humidity
•In high humidity, more water vapor is available, leading to elaborate and ornate designs.
•In low humidity, the crystals are simpler and more sparse.Surface Texture
•Smooth surfaces like glass produce delicate, flat patterns.
•Rough surfaces like wood or grass create more complex, three-dimensional structures.Airflow
•Windy conditions can disrupt crystal growth, forming irregular or compact patterns.
•Still air allows more symmetrical and orderly crystals to form.Impurities
•Dust, scratches, or tiny particles on a surface act as nucleation points, shaping how crystals grow.
Crystal Structures
While all frost crystals are composed of ice (frozen water molecules arranged in a hexagonal structure), the patterns they form—like feathers, stars, or ferns—are highly variable. This variability makes each frost crystal as unique as a snowflake.
When water vapor freezes directly to a surface and skips the liquid form, it’s called deposition.
Several factors can directly influence the shape of the ice crystals, but one such factor would be the surface texture. That’s why dried up leaves and grasses intrigue me so much!
So pretty and yet so fleeting. These were taken late afternoon where the sun didn’t grace the ground. Conditions have to be just right and you have to find areas where the sun can’t get to in order to be able to capture the beauty of the ice crystals.
Today has been nice; starting out at a wonderful church service, a coffee date where we ran into an old coworker of mine from another lifetime ago and who just happens to be an unemployed licensed optician as well. Might be a potential new employee for the clinic-fingers crossed 🤞 anyway!
That’s gonna be it for now. Take care! Have a blessed week ahead and enjoy the rest of your day wherever you are! 🙏🌎🙏

NLT Ephesians 1:9-11
God has now revealed to us his mysterious will regarding Christ—which is to fulfill his own good plan. And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth. Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan.
