Blockchain and Climate Change: A Path to Sustainable Solutions

Blockchain, a technology popularized by cryptocurrencies such as bitcoins, has been in focus for the capacity to reform different sectors. However, their implications to environmental conservation especially in the energy consumption of the proof-of-work consensus mechanisms which are deployed in some algorithms have elicited a lot of concern. However, it is pertinent to note that blockchain technology can make great impacts to environmental causes through innovative solutions and green solutions.

He also knows that blockchain can also contribute to the shift towards renewable energies. Microgrids, based on the blockchain can provide P2P trading in energy. This will enable those that generate more energy from renewable resources than they use to sell the extra energy to others who need more and thus help increase the use of green energy sources. Further, blockchain technology has the potential to support the tracing and validation of renewable energy certificates thus giving assurance that the energy that is being traded is indeed clean.

Supporting Sustainable Agriculture

The blockchain platforms can encourage sustainable agriculture practices through smart contracts. For example, fossil fuel-free farmers might be incentivised to employ regenerative agriculture practices as crop rotation and a minimal use of pesticides. Others improve the quality of soil fertility, bring about biodiversity, and store carbon that can help in climate change3 adaptation.
