STEEMFOODS: THE TASTE OF SEA URCHIN (Swaki)

Hello Steemians! @theseusej here🤗

It’s been a long time! 🤔 How have you been coping in this tough times? I hope you are still doing great amidst the crisis that we are all facing.

Living in a municipality surrounded by beautiful beaches rich in marine life, I and my wife’s family decided to go to the nearby island to unwind and taste the very popular “sea urchin” following the government protocols.

How to get there?

Since we are from Lapu-Lapu City, a sitio in Brgy. Mactan where the port of Angasil is located, we just walk 10 kilometers from home to be able to ride the fast craft going to Olanggo Island. The trip took 5-10 minutes only. When we arrived in Santa Rosa port, we rode a tricycle going to San Vicente where most of the locals and tourists visits.

Olanggo Island is indeed a heaven-sent paradise for the people to see how majestic God’s wondrous works are. It is an island full of hospitable people who is very willing to help and offer their services for the locals and tourists to taste their marine products.

The island is rich in sea urchins. Sea urchins are found on the depths of the sea floors. Since it is high tide that time, we asks some fishermen to harvest some sea urchins riding in their small engine boat. And after an hour of getting those from the ocean floor, they were able to present us the live, big and small, tickling sea urchins.
In my twenty-seven years of existence, I have never tasted sea urchin.

Though, I have heard a lot of people introducing it to me and its benefits to our body, but still, I don’t have the guts of eating such. However, my wife and her family persuaded me to eat it because of the good things it does to us. Her mom and other members of the family even prepared it for me.

In eating sea urchin, all you need is a knife to cut the shell into half. Then, you must clean the inner part of it which comprises of yellow and black mixture that is edible. You need to be extra careful in handling it because the outside part is somehow itchy. That's why when it's time to cut the urchin I let my mother do it, because she knows it better than me.😁

Furthermore, though it has not been scientifically proven, but there are a lot of couples who said that sea urchin help them in bearing a child. Since, I am just a newly wedded man who wanted to have my own family, I tasted it once and for all. And it taste, awesome! I couldn’t figure out how the tastes play in my mouth. It is a mixture of salty and slimy yet there is also a sweet after taste.

The benefit stated above may be true or not, yet I am so happy that I was able to finally taste a sea urchin. Though, it is an unusual taste for me but I know I will be able to get used and love its taste.
