'Shalban Vihara' | Back to 7th-century!

in GEMS4 years ago (edited)

Visiting historical places is a wonderful experience. And if it's from very ancient times, I never say no to this. I had the change to visit many historical and popular tourist places when while studying at the University of Dhaka, mostly for 'excursion' purposes. Yesterday one of my friends asked some very old photos from our visit to Shalban Vihara- Comilla and I went through the 'treasure' after a long time!

Buddhist viharas

This place is called Mainamati which is located to Comilla- Bangladesh. There are more than 50 ancient Buddhist settlements that are very ancient. Now it became a popular tourist place. These Buddhist viharas' are from 8th and 12th century CE. It was the home of many popular Buddhist monks. You can know more about this place and history Here and Here

Back then I used to had a 'Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W55'. Those are some good old days! The photos I'm gonna share today were captured by that camera. We, a total group of nearly 100 people/students visited the historical place in 2009. I hope you will also love to see photos of Shalban Vihara.

There are 115 cells in Shalban Vihara which used to be isolated study and pray place for each monk. These were like their University, Buddhists used to come from different regions to study and learn here. The place is huge, like five kilometers. Nowadays, it became rusty and dusty. I wouldn't say you will love to visit here during summer but it's really a great place to come closer to history.

Also, there's Mainamati site Museum, which is located just next to Shavian Vihara. You will get to see a lot of good collection of artifacts found at these sites. Capturing photos in the museum is prohibited!

If you go through the detail of this structure (links are given on the top) you will surely wonder, how organized and enriched this place was. The main structure went underneath now, after so many centuries. The pathways, the study places, the temples, the teacher's places everything was well organized and connected. I can just visualize how wonderful this place used to be!

It was indeed a great travel and learning experience!

THANKS FOR YOUR LOVE AND SUPPORT!

Much Love
