Keep the fire burning (Forest shelter journal #3) | Mantén el fuego encendido (Diario del refugio en el bosque #3)
I'm not a goal-driven person in general. Sometimes I am, but mostly I'm emotion-driven and I like being that way. My emotions carried me for a good while away from the forest shelter project but lately the tides have been calm and I've been able to spend more time here.
No soy una persona que se mueve en base a objetivos en general. A veces lo soy, pero sobre todo me mueven las emociones y me gusta ser así. Mis emociones me alejaron un buen rato del proyecto del refugio en el bosque, pero últimamente las aguas han estado tranquilas y he podido pasar más tiempo ahí.
The days have been gray and it gets hard to get inspired to anything about anything. In the silence of the forest, how do you talk your mind into action? "I have food and water, a tent to sleep in... why bother doing anything at all? Everything is already in harmony here and I'm nothing but an invader", my mind would say.
Los días han estado grises y se hace difícil inspirarse. En el silencio del bosque, ¿cómo haces que tu mente actúe? "¿Tengo comida y agua, una carpa para dormir ... ¿para qué molestarse en hacer algo? Aquí todo está en armonía y no soy más que un invasor", decía mi mente.
One day I tried something different. I started the day playing the guitar and singing some uplifting lyrics. Then I lit a fire and placed heated up water in the kettle for some yerba mate, cooked some black beans with rice, and kept the fire going for most of the day.
Un día probé algo diferente. Empecé el día tocando la guitarra y cantando letras motivantes. Luego encendí un fuego y puse agua caliente en la tetera para un poco de yerba mate, cocí unos frijoles negros con arroz y mantuve el fuego encendido la mayor parte del día.
Between the gathering of firewood and keeping the embers alive, I begin to feel more awake and present. I begin to understand that the phrase: "keep the fire burning" is more than just poetry, it's key advice to live a better and more fulfilling earthly experience.
Entre juntar leña y mantener las brasas, empiezo a sentirme más despierto y presente. Empiezo a entender que la frase: "mantén el fuego encendido" es más que poesía, es un consejo clave para vivir una experiencia terrenal mejor y más plena.
From that day on I have made it a ritual to begin with a good fire, yerba mate, some positive vibes expressed on the guitar and voice. After that I can even start thinking about building or other "more productive labors", so to speak.
Desde ese día lo he convertido en un ritual comenzar con un buen fuego, yerba mate, unas vibraciones positivas expresadas en la guitarra y la voz. Después de eso, incluso puedo empezar a pensar en la construcción u otras "labores productivas", por así decirlo.
That very day I had company from two sistas and we had fun playing around with clay I got from the river. More of the magic of the fire and it's power to unite people around it.
Ese mismo día tuve la compañía de dos hermanas y nos divertimos jugando con arcilla que conseguí del río. Más de la magia del fuego y su poder para unir a las personas a su alrededor.
I remember a few years ago, while tripping balls, I gazed at the fire and the multiple shapes that formed before my eyes... I had a feeling of "understanding" it's role in the forming of civilization, that it not only gave warmth and light, but also "communicated" ancient knowledge and wisdom through the shapes formed in the embers.
Recuerdo que hace unos años, mientras viajaba en ácido, miraba el fuego y las múltiples formas que se formaban ante mis ojos ... Tuve la sensación de "entender" su papel en la formación de la civilización, que no solo daba calidez. y luz, pero también "comunicaba" conocimientos y sabiduría ancestrales a través de las formas formadas en las brasas.
Making that fire burn again... Time flies between keeping the fire going, heating water, cooking and building. I thought that my main job was to build and that I wasn’t suppose to “waste” time on anything else, but boy was I wrong. It’s way healthier to live decently, even if you still don’t have a house to live in. It’s no excuse that you’re sleeping in a tent to spend the days in hunger and coldness, feeling like there’s no reason to do anything.
Haciendo que el fuego vuelva a arder ... El tiempo pasa volando entre mantener el fuego encendido, calentar el agua, cocinar y construir. Pensé que mi trabajo principal era construir y que se suponía que no debía "perder" el tiempo en nada más, pero estaba equivocado. Es mucho más saludable vivir decentemente, incluso si todavía no tienes una casa para vivir. No es excusa que estés durmiendo en una tienda de campaña para pasar los días en el hambre y el frío, sintiendo que no hay razón para hacer nada.
Vito made a nice ash tray with clay, there’s obvious talent in those hands as it’s not something she usually works on. Yerba mate is part of the local culture, there is even a set of rules of how it should be consumed under social circumstances. Now that's what it's all about, a good fire to heat up some water changes everything. The stone gets pretty hot after a while and serves as a decent stove.
Ahora de eso se trata, un buen fuego para calentar un poco de agua lo cambia todo. La piedra se calienta bastante después de un tiempo y sirve como una estufa decente.
This lamb was raised by my mom since he was abandoned at birth. I have a nice relationship with him but for some reason most people fear him which is really screwed up. How the hell do you fear a lamb? They're like the most submissive creatures ever. Well, when he feels the fear he rams against visitors and while I normally could have a good laugh about it, he also attacks children which is not cool at all.
Este cordero fue criado por mi mamá desde que fue abandonado al nacer. Tengo una buena relación con él, la mayoría de la gente le tiene miedo y me parece fome la situación. ¿Cómo le tienes miedo a un cordero? Son las criaturas más sumisas de la Tierra. Bueno, cuando siente el miedo, ataca a los visitantes y, aunque normalmente yo podría reírme mucho, también ataca a los niños, lo cual no está tan bueno.
Ok, I know this looks like a complete mess, but I know what I'm doing... I think. At least it's sturdy and firm, and I think the end result will be nice. Just be patient with me. I was trying to be orderly about it but I realized that I was missing out on a lot of nice branches by trying to use straight ones only. Now I'm just using all branches I find and try to place them wherever they can form a triangle.
Sé que esto parece un desastre, pero sé lo que estoy haciendo... creo. Al menos es resistente y firme, y creo que el resultado final será agradable. Tengan paciencia conmigo. My plan is that when there is no more space to keep placing branches like this, I will start hammering smaller branches in vertical position until there are just small enough gaps to fill in with mud. Sure, this isn't an architect's wet dream, but it's functional and quick to build. After it's habitable I will be able to slowly make some better designs.
Mi plan es que cuando no haya más espacio para seguir colocando ramas como estas, comenzaré a martillar ramas más pequeñas en posición vertical hasta que haya espacios lo suficientemente pequeños para llenar con barro. Claro que no es la fantasía de un arquitecto, pero es funcional y rápido de construir. Una vez que sea habitable, podré hacer algunos diseños mejores poco a poco.
By the time I'm writing this, the place has already gone under some considerable transformation. However, I'm leaving those pictures for the next post because I've been writing this one forever and can't seem to find enough time to finish it.
En el momento en que escribo esto, el lugar ya ha pasado por una transformación considerable. Sin embargo, dejo esas fotos para la próxima publicación porque he estado escribiendo esta desde hace como mil años y no logro encontrar el tiempo suficiente para terminarla.

Tobacco has been a constant companion in these adventures. I'm reducing my consumption though. Went from 4 to 1 daily cigars in the last week and plan on not buying anymore, if I have the willpower that is.
El tabaco ha sido un compañero constante en estas aventuras. Aunque estoy reduciendo mi consumo. Pasé de 4 a 1 cigarrillos diarios en la última semana y planeo no comprar más, si tengo la fuerza de voluntad.
Finishing the day by taking the animal companions back to my mother's place where they will be fed. Yes, you guessed, I also went to get fed there since my sister made a delicious vegan pizza that day.
Terminando el día llevando a los animales de compañía de regreso al lugar de mi madre donde serán alimentados. Sí, lo adivinaste, también fui a alimentarme allí ya que mi hermana hizo una deliciosa pizza vegana ese día.
