Steem4nigeria Accelerator Contest Week 63: The lies I grew up believing

Greetings friends, here is a must read

What were the lies you believed while growing up?

Many lies I grew up believing many, and sometimes I wonder how stupid I was believing them, I could remember a phrase in a book(sweet sixteen) written by a famous Nigerian writer Bolagi Abdullahi that said "Another name for a child is stupid", I was in this category believing things that were so absurd, that's a child for you.

Do you know I was told that when the teeth on the maxilla(upper gum) breaks since it is up, I should always throw it to the roof so that it will grow fast, many at times when I see my friends teeth not growing fast I ask if he/she threw it to the roof, a different case for the mandible you have to bury it on the ground, unless your teeth growth will be delayed, imagine how absurd that was, I was always believing without thinking twice, as far as you are a Nigerian child you can testify about this.

Another is "Don't ever swallow an orange seed unless it will germinate in your belly and burst out from your head." Over time, after so much experience of swallowing the slippery orange seed and it didn't grow, my belief in this faded.

As teenagers, we were exposed to some teaching about puberty, maturity, and what brings about pregnancy, and I was always told that anytime I touched a girl, she would become pregnant, so I abstained. I had some female friends, but we only talked and gist, but I don't shake them or touch them; I mean, a mere touch like having a climbing insect removed from the body was so scary to do. Imagine the absurdity...

What was your reaction after finding out the truth as an adult?

What could I do? A time of my foolishness was gone, and all I did was wonder how serious this thing was to me that I had to believe...

Do you subscribe to telling lies to young minds in a bid to protect them, or do you choose to call a spade a spade?

Young minds are so curious to know, and they may not understand whenever dos and don'ts are explained in detail. Do you know the significance of throwing detached teeth to the roof and also burying some? It is an assurance that your teeth will grow back; those lies shape young minds because they are too young to understand certain things; these lies are to shape though lying is not good, so I won't call this a lie but a statement to shape tender minds; calling it this, I will say this is necessary, and I will do this to protect them...
