Pissed off; The Cashier Pushed Me To Edge
My day started very cool as the sun's brightness shimmered through my translucent cotton window blind. I slept late last night, and that could be seen by my comment. The reason I stayed up to that hour was because I had a nap during the day; my eye was fixed on my device for over 5 hours, and yet I don't even know why I could participate in an engagement challenge.
Staying up that night, coupled with the coldness of the late-night hours and the early morning breeze, was the reason for my sluggishness. I was up this time but couldn't get up from the sofa since I dozed off on it the previous day. I heard Mom say she would be leaving for work very early; she would be driving, and she couldn't afford to stay back even though the fuel price had suddenly skyrocketed. The warning strike wasn't still enough to put things in place by the government.
I was actually in a very good mood in the course of watching a session in a movie that was so captivating, eating my akara with cassava powder, ironically called vanilla groceries, until an unexpected light out.

Mum's sister, who has been staying with us for a while now for a long visit due to work leave, asked me to go to the bank to withdraw some money for her to pay for some of her business goods. She gave me her ATM card, told me the PIN, and told me the amount to withdraw. She also instructed me to check her balance before withdrawing the said amount.
I left for the errand, and on getting there, the ATM wasn't functional. I wondered why all the stands were just there like a standing fan. I thought of what to do and put a call across to see if I could reach my aunt to know my next move, but it wasn't going through. I called some neighbours of which I had their contact information, but it wasn't going through, so I decided to get inside the bank to make a withdrawal since my aunt was banking with them.
On getting there, I offered a formal greeting as usual to the cashier, and I went through the process of withdrawal through the bank POS. After the receipt was given, I was told to write my name and account number. This was when I told her that it wasn't my account. Then she asked me to provide the account number. I told her I didn't know the account number as it wasn't my account. She told me to go and get the account number. Transport is hiking this day, and I was given just 300 naira by my aunt to withdraw this money. From the bank, I went back to get the account number from my aunt, and on returning, I was told to go back and bring my aunt.
If my aunt had wanted to reach the bank today, she wouldn't have asked me to come here, I told them. What was so agitated at the cashier telling me to go back and get my aunt at this instance? I concluded that she was calling me a thief indirectly, even though she didn't profess that. You requested an account number, and then you asked me to bring my aunt. For what reason? She told me to meet the bank manager. I went to meet the woman, and the woman said the same thing. To prove to them that I am not as frivolous as they think, I went back to bring my aunt, but I promised to rant in the bank.
When I went there, I showed my aunt where the woman stood, and I ordered her to attend to her. I left and stood quietly; it seemed she was delaying after making me waste a sum of N1200 for transportation just to withdraw N20,000. How much loss has my aunty enquired about because of the cashier's wrong approach in what I would say was security consciousness?
I went and the word she made that made me piss off was when she said "oga shift", it's pidgin English which means leave that place, I began my rant, if you don't have a better security system in this bank then close it down, you were indirectly calling me a thief now that I have brought my aunt what can you say about that, do you think everyone engages in some sort of frivolity because the economy is the way it is, you bankers do things without a rethink, close it down if you don't have a right approach to maintaining security, we don't safe our money here because you offer so much interest or because there are no other places, we safe because of security and accountability, so if you can't offer that then close down.
Do you know what? This bank is the only bank in our vicinity for now, and because there are no other bank branches around, they do what they like; they decide when their ATM should function and when it shouldn't. They didn't have any excuse for stressing me. I asked their security, who tapped me on the shoulder, telling me to calm down.
If I had come to take money from my aunt's account without her knowledge, do you think I would have been inside the bank, or what is the function of the CCTV? Common sense should have told them that, or if I had known the procedures for withdrawing inside the bank and had known the procedures for withdrawing inside the bank and had come with the account number she requested, don't you think I would have gone with the money? When people open up to tell the truth, you don't consider it, but if it was a lie, which you may not easily detect, you would adopt them thinking it is the truth.
They were now telling me it was a savings account. That is why, blablabla, if I had withdrawn from the ATM, it wouldn't have been a savings account, right? and hold on. Why is the ATM not paying? Is it not your strategy to generate some income from the POS you placed outside for those who are not banking with your bank? All these strategies I know.
The anger made me mentally unstable; no pictures either; an angry man cannot take a picture unless he isn't angry, so I think the bank system should update its security system. I withdrew with a pin, not with a withdrawal slip. Then why didn't you give me the money? I had to bring my aunt to get the money, tripling my transport fare; it is not fair. How about depositing? Why don't you ask if the account the person is depositing to is his account? Common sense should also tell you that if a person is trusted an amount to deposit, he can also be trusted a card with a pin to withdraw inside the bank. No criminal will be so bold as to withdraw inside the bank without full preparation.
Even though I had to rant, I know none of us were right—the bank cashier and I. She was trying to be security conscious, and then I proved to her that even though there is a backdown on the economy, not everyone engages in frivolous acts.
