"A right delayed is a right denied". He also said, "A man dies when he refuses to stand up for that which is right". Martin Luther King Jr.

How do you explain fundamental human rights?

Fundamental rights are usually referred to in the context of a constitution, while human rights are associated with international law.

Human rights belong to everyone, no matter our nationality, where we live, gender, ethnic background, skin color, religion, language, or any other characteristic. We all have the same rights without any discrimination. These rights are connected, rely on each other, and cannot be separated.

However, fundamental human rights are those basic rights and freedom all citizens of a country/ state enjoys not withstanding your ethnicity, sex or nationality.

We have right to life, right to freedom of movement, right to freedom of speech, right to work, right to education and so on.

Do you think all the citizens have these rights, or is it only made for the rich? (You can give examples if any)

Every citizen has the same rights, regardless of their status, religion, family background, skin color, or social level.

It is sad that we live in a world where only the wealthy seem to have access to certain privileges. The rich often believe that the poor do not deserve good things in life or the freedom to express themselves simply because they lack money.

In some families, it has become common for the youngest son to earn a fortune from unknown sources and then return home, acting as if he is superior to his older brothers. During family meetings, the younger son is allowed to speak while the eldest must remain silent until the meeting ends.

These issues reflect what we see in society today, but it should not be this way. Everyone, no matter who they are, deserves equal rights.

Have you been deprived of expressing your fundamental human rights before? What action did you take?

I have experienced a lack of freedom of speech. During my university days, I was part of the executive committee of a national association. One time, we visited the government house in my state and met with the governor. During this meeting, we discussed an agenda for our next session at school.

Before the discussion, I raised my hand to share some ideas that I thought could help us, but I was quickly silenced by some men present. They told me it was inappropriate for a woman to speak in front of men at such a meeting and that I had no right to voice my thoughts in the governor's presence.

I felt very uncomfortable and questioned why I was even there. As the secretary, I was supposed to be part of the meeting, but I was denied the chance to speak. I didn’t understand it, but that was the only time I ever spoke up in a meeting. I learned my place and kept to it for the rest of my term.

In Nigeria, there are many basic human rights that every citizen has, but I will focus on three for this discussion:

  1. Right to life: Every person is born free and equal in rights. No one should be enslaved, tortured, or treated inhumanely. Life is a gift from God, and everyone deserves the chance to live fully.

  2. Right to personal liberty: Everyone should have the freedom to make their own choices. What one person decides may not be the same for another, so people should not be restricted in how they choose to live.

  3. Right to freedom from discrimination: Since we are all equal in the eyes of God, no one should face discrimination. A person of any race should earn the same pay as another, and people from different backgrounds should have equal opportunities, regardless of their height or wealth.

Which of the fundamental human rights should be removed from the law. (Give your reasons)

I believe that non of these rights should be excluded because all of them are important to all citizens. You cannot have the right to live and not be free to express yourself through your words, actions, culture, religion, or clothing. Living without freedom is like being dead. I think all basic human rights must be respected for citizens to truly live well.

Lastly, human rights must always be respected. Everyone over 18 should have access to basic human rights. No one should face mistreatment or discrimination based on their race, background, or social status.
