Making resolutions for the year has become a norm. At the beginning of each year, most people resolve the things they will do and the ones they will not. In this post, I will be writing about my Understanding of a New Year resolution, my thoughts about New Year resolutions, and the missing link that leads to failure in achieving these resolutions.

What do you understand by "New Year's Resolution"

New Year resolutions are the goals one sets for himself at the beginning of the year and he is firmly determined to achieve them. This may also be defined as the determination to abstain from bad habits.

New Year resolutions enable an individual to reflect on his past to see the things he didn't do well and what led to such undesired habits. To my understanding, New Year resolutions are not mere goals setting or mere saying 'I wouldn't do this again this year', but it involves having plans on achieving the goals we set.

Do you think it's a futile yearly routine or a viable means of achieving yearly goals?

I would not say having a New Year resolution is a futile routine. A man who does not have a set of plans wouldn't succeed in his dealings; likewise, a man who does not have plans for the year may end up not achieving anything for the year.

New year resolutions will enable the person who resolutes to have plans for the year to achieve his goals. He will sit and check the things he wants to achieve for the year, but not just that, he will also check what he will need to do to achieve his goals.

If our resolutions have to do with refraining from bad habits, we will take a moment and think of the actions that led to such habits. This process will enable us to see the practical steps we would take to stop such habits.

Affirmatively, New Year resolutions are means of setting practical goals and a practical step to achieving them.

What do you think the missing link is that makes people fail with their New Year resolutions?

• The first thing I think leads to failure in achieving New Year resolutions is not being realistic. Imagine a man who earns fifty dollars, which is about seven thousand Naira in a month, setting a goal of building a story building for the year; where will the money come from? While setting goals or making New Year resolutions, let's be realistic by setting goals we can achieve. It's recommended we start with short-term goals, which are the ones we can easily achieve within a short period.

• The second thing I think leads to failure in achieving New Year resolutions is lacking of planning. Resolutions are not mere words, but they involve planning. If a person says, for example, that he is going to have a regular exercise session but does not have a schedule that includes exercise, he may end up not exercising at all. Therefore, if we want to achieve our resolutions, we need to plan how to achieve them; that's getting to know the things we have to do and doing them appropriately.
