Hike In The Prices Of Foodstuffs In Nigeria, Is There A Remedy?
Over time, the cost of living in Nigeria has become higher, which makes it hard for some families to have nourishing meals. There is a hike in prices of foodstuffs, for example, common foods such as rice and beans are very expensive in the market. The rate of inflation is unbearable, and this has made many wonder if there's anything the citizens have failed to do, and they believe the former days were better. But what made the former days better?
Agriculture, our forefathers indulged in Agricultural activities such as planting, poultry, livestock, etc. Then, one of the primary sources of the national revenue was agriculture. As a nation, we planted cassava, rice, beans, cocoa, etc. Nigeria, as a nation, exported agricultural produce to other nations, and this boosted the then economy. Almost every household indulged in agriculture, and as a result, foodstuffs were cheap because supplies were higher than demand. All of a sudden, this changed, and sadly, most Nigerians began looking down on agriculture, and it became work for the poor and the low-class people. Gradually, we dumped agriculture, and only a few people indulge in agriculture which makes demand higher than supply.
Is there a remedy to a hike in prices of foodstuffs?
Yes! Agriculture is the remedy. The only way out is going back to Agriculture as a nation. The government should sponsor farmers by making agricultural tools available for them and providing fertilizer. Commercial agriculture should once again be promoted, which would bring back to existence the commercial quantity of farm produce. When the quantity of farm produce is higher, supply would equal demand, if not higher than demand.
Every household should view agriculture as the life it is, not as a demeaning provision. If your circumstances permit, indulge in agriculture, and you may even pay laborers if you can't do it yourself. When there is much farm produce, or if every family indulges in agriculture, there would be deflation in prices of farm produce.
Conclusively, if, as a nation, let us promote commercial agriculture, deflation may occur. The government should encourage Farmers by making provisions for them to carry out their agricultural activities with ease. Every household should go back to Agriculture and be involved in subsistence agriculture. This is the way out of the hike in prices of things
