My Neighborhood Watch #87 - Reporting Events Around us

Greetings distinguished Steemians, I am happy to be a part of this contest for the first time. My sincere commendations goes to @xkool24 for always gathering us here so as to give reports of the significant things happening in our neighborhood. Especially those which we were direct witnesses.

In this week neighborhood Watch Contest, I want to share three things that happened in Nigeria, Uyo Local Government Area. To be precised, these events happen around University of Uyo were I happens to be a student. These events include

Uyo Local Government Area is one of the Local Government Areas in Akwa Ibom State. It happens to be the capital city of the state. Being the capital city, it attracts many people to migrate to the state thus making it kind of populated. The population of the state makes life kind of difficult despites the numerous remedy implemented by the Government so as to make life easier. This difficulties makes people venture into different businesses at different positions in the state.

Ibom Plaza being a good and effective location for business since it's located at the heart of the town, makes many women, men and children migrate there for the purpose of business and relaxation. This migration makes plaza highly populated with people and temporary structures. Residence before this time has raised serries of concerns on how the place has become a hideout for criminals activities, including the sales of stolen items (I e phones, dresses, laptops etc), rape and the spaced designated for car park now full of kiorks thus, pushing the vehicles to be parked at the road site and this promotes traffic around Ikot Ekpene Road, Nwanniba and Oron road axis

On the 13th of February 2025, The Uyo Capital City Authority (UCCDA) under the leadership of its chairman Rt. Hon. Anietie Eka demolished and scattered the entire place under the vision for a cleaner and more organized Uyo. One of the UCCDA members stated emphatically that, "they were not destroying people's business. Rather, that it was a way of stopping criminality from hiding under the wings of economic activities.

While this sounds good and worth celebrating, it is saddened to know that this demolition was done without the notice of the occupants. Because, according to one of the victims, there was no pre-information given to the occupants of this region to evacuate the venue. Rather, the UCCDA took them in surprised which led to the damage of people's properties and personal items since they attack was with great force. It learned the demolition caught across other places as well.

While the UCCDA members went back home happily satisfied for a job well done, poor market women, young traders, and entrepreneur went home crying bitterly due the loss that has been forcefully passed on them by the UCCDA. We hope that they would be some compensation given to them. However, until then, let's move to the second report.

Science Education Department is one the departments in University comprising of five different units (Chemistry Education, Physics Education, Integrated Science Education, Biology Education and Mathematics Education) the level two hundred students' of science Education were asked to improvised different instructional resources that would aid in the teaching and learning of Chemistry. This task was given to them in the course Tittled Improvisation in Chemistry since November 2024.***

The students played over it until the due date. Due to the frustration and everything, most of the students ended up improvising substandard materials while others bought materials directly from the market. The course lecturer being student centered and caring helped and guided them towards how they could manage time effectively and as well, guided them again on the components of a good instructional resource.

This made the students did their very best. Among the items improvised include: wall charts, mortar, test tube rack, reagent holders, mounting, stove, spatula, solar panel, organic indicators etc After the collection of the materials, many students were still found wanting as theirs were not accepted due to how substandard there were. However, they have an opportunity to submit a better one before 18th of February 2025.

This happens to be one of the most fascinating projects held by this institution this year. My reasons for this is tighten to the fact that the university of Uyo students has experienced series ups and downs due to the poor drainage system around 1000 capacity, Department of Mathematics, 600 Capacity and the Five Arm department all at permanent site.

Despite the fact that this area serves as a major route into these tyrant lecture venues and auditorium, it is always a very disgusting route during the smallest down pour. This poor drainage system fights against students attending lectures freely using this routes during the rainy season as the road is always flooded, muddy and dirty.

The nature of the place put smiles on the lips of everyone Uniuyo students as they embark a construction project so as to enable a proper channelling of water. With this, students and lecturers will have complete freedom in accessing the lecture venues around this axis.
