The Language In My Country

My Country is Nigeria. Found in the Western part of Africa is home probably one of the most culturally diverse civilizations, homing over 370 tribes and over 525 native languages. This would definitely be a fantastic site for a linguistic enthusiast. Despite having this compendium of languages, there are three major languages being Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa languages but ironically none of the above mentioned languages is the official language of the Nation neither is any other native language. The official language of Nigeria is English (British) yet contrarily the most widely used language in Nigeria is the Pidgin English a catchy blend of English and other indigenous languages. One fun thing about the Nigerian Pidgin English is that you can almost never be grammatically wrong with it.
Other languages spoken by Nigerians are as follows:

Ibibio/ efik
Tiv
Boki
Kanuri
Ijaw
Edo
Anang
Igala
Ekoi
Eket
Bekwarra etc.

Among the listed languages in your country, how many are you familiar with?

I haven't traveled much of the country, I have spent most of my life in the southern part of the country but I have also spent quite some time in the west. Although I can speak my native language fluently(which is Ibibio) and sparsely understand one of the major languages (Yoruba), on hearing I can readily identify over 10 other indigenous languages. One thing to note is that a single tribe may have up to three (3) or more languages having minor or major differences in intonation and other qualities.

How has this language improved/helped your life and business?

Language has helped my life in numerous basic ways. One of them being that it helps my relationship with my fellows as people are more inclined to and at ease when they discover that I speak a local dialect like them and even when I find myself in a marketplace, speaking the local dialect attracts an automatic discounts and promotes even more flexible negotiations and also speaking this local language helps with my self esteem. If I find myself among my dialect-speaking fellows, I do not feel alienated or weird, I confidently mingle and there are a lot of clients who prefer to work with people of similar tribe, a big advantages I have been able to exploit a number of times.

Are you willing to teach your children these languages?

I will Definitely teach them the language as It is a source of identification. It is important for a child to understand and speak his/her native languages, this ensures that the useful culture is passed down through the generations. Over here in west Africa it is an embarrassing scenario where a child claims to be from a local tribe but cannot understand the dialect of the tribe. I have enjoyed numerous benefits through speaking these languages it would be unfair to deny my children these privileges and finally being multilingual is fun. The joy of fluency and flexibility of switching and adapting to the language environment you find yourself is second to none.
