SLC21/WK6: Understanding Burns: Types, Causes, and First Aid Responses
Good afternoon everyone. I'm happy to be here. The teaching on burns caught my attention. It was very easy to understand as the teacher taught it a very simple yet detailed way.
These are the answers to the questions
Q.1 Write a detailed first aid response for the following scenario" You witness a child accidentally spilling hot tea on their arm. What immediate steps will you take? What actions will you avoid? Include considerations for burn severity and explain your reasons
Thermal burn is one of the commonest types of burns especially at home.
IMMEDIATE STEPS I WILL TAKE:
I. First, I will remain calm and not panic. Panicking might lead me to unprofessionally and even put the child to more risk or shock
ii. I will remove the child from the danger zone. Ensure the child is safe by taking the cup from him and moving him to a safer place.
iii. Cool down the burn by running tap water over the burn for 10-20 Minutes
iv. I will access the severity or degree of the burn, if it is minor or major. if it is minor, I'll proceed by
v. Washing the burn surface very mildly with a mild soap
vi. Apply sterile, non sticky gloves over the wound
vi. A further step will be getting prescribed pain relief for him
WHAT TO AVOID DOING:
i. Avoid panicking as this can cause you to act in a way that will lean the child to further harm
ii. Don't cool off burn with ice or ice water as this can cause frost leading to further skin tissue damage
iii. Don't pop or try to open the blister, this can lead to infection
iv. Don't rub butter, grease, toothpaste, oil on the burn
v. Don't use cotton wool or a sticky guaze to cover the wound
vi. Don't cover the burn so tightly, this can slow healing process
Q.2 "A worker in a warehouse suffers an electrical burn after touching exposed live wires. The burn site shows entrance and exit points, with damage to the skin and underlying tissues. What are the immediate first aid actions you should take, and what critical steps should you avoid? How does this differ from treating thermal burns?"
An electric Burn is in most cases a minor burn, that's us 2nd or 3rd degree burn. So we will treat a major burn
IMMEDIATE FIRST AID ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN:
i. Ensure scene safety by checking out for live wires, flames or chemical. You can call for help because you might not be able to do it alone
ii. Turn off the electric source before moving the victim out of the scene.
iii. Check if the victim is conscious and responding. Give CPR if the patient isn't responding. Go ahead to clear airways and remove any discomforting wear/ornament
iv. use fire extinguisher to quench the source of fire
v. Don't immerse victim in water to avoid shock and hyperthermia
vi. Cover loosely with a clean dry clothes or sterile gauze
vii. Mobilize the patient to be moved to the hospital for professional attention
WHAT CRITICAL STEPS SHOULD YOU AVOID:
i. Do not go into the fire scene without a Personal Protective Equipment e.g coverall, rubber boot, rubber gloves. This is to prevent stepping on or touching a live wire
ii. Don't immerse the victim into the water as this can cause shock
ii. Don't pop or open the blisters
iii. Don't rub ANYTHING on the blisters not even home remedy
iv. Don't tightly wrap the burn site
HOW DOES THIS DIFFER FROM TREATING THERMAL BURNS?
The processes of treating thermal burn differs from electric Burn. This is as a result of the severity of burn or the degree of burn
Electric Burns are always more severe than thermal. They are handled as major burn, which can fall into 2nd degree or 3rd degree burn
In this cases, it goes beyond first aid treatment. A wholesome and professional attention is needed
Q3. "A worker in a factory accidentally spills a strong acid on their arm, causing immediate pain, redness, and blistering. A colleague tries to wash it off with water but notices the burn spreading."A. Identify the type of burn.B. What went wrong during the initial first aid?.C. Propose the correct first aid steps and explain why each step is important
A. This is called a chemical burn
B. During the initial first aid what went wrong is that the colleague tried washing off acid with water which reacts with the acid and causes further spread
C. CORRECT FIRST AID STEP
I.Neutralize the acid first. For example, if the acid is Hydrochloric Acid (HCl), you can neutralize with a solution of baking soda and water
ii. Remove contaminated clothing and accessories as this can cause further burn
iii. Don't rub ANYTHING on the burns
iv. Cover not tightly using a sterile, non sticky guaze or a dry cloth
v.Seek medical attention because first aid treatment alone is not wholesome for this type of burn
You are a first responder in a rural area. Two people are injured in a house fire: Person A has a large area of third-degree burns but is conscious and calm. Person B has second-degree burns on both legs and is in severe pain. You can only help one person immediately due to resource constraints. Whom do you prioritize, and why? Support your decision with medical and ethical reasoning
As a first aid responder, I will will prioritize the person with the third degree burn.
HERE ARE MY MEDICAL REASONS:
i.Risk of damage to organ and infection: If the patient with third degree burn is not treated first, it can result to infection and organ failure/damage
ii.Severity and Criticality of the burns: Concerning severity, third degree burns are more severe than 2nd. This is because it affects all the layers of the skin,
iii.The third degree burn might lead to further complications like hypoxia which is inadequate oxygenation, hypovolemia (significant loss of body fluid), sepsis etc
ETHICALLY, Attending to the patient with third degree burn shows you have value for human life, honours their right to fundamental human right to life. Lastly, it shows compassion and empathy recognising the person's pain and chances of living
Q5: Create an infographic on burn management. Include the following:
a. Types of Burns and Their Causes (Electrical, Thermal, etc)

b. Different types of burns (1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree)

d. What NOT to Do During Burn First Aid." Use visuals and short explanations for each point.
