A Fatal Accident Leaves Five Persons Dead As Ebonyi Transport Bus Overturns On Umuahia Highway, FRSC Comes To Rescue

INTRODUCTION

Every means of transportattion has its own risks associated with it. The air, the rail, the road, the sea; they all have their associated risks which comes in various forms of accident.

Most often, the road transportation records the most significant accidents which leads to untimely loss of lives. The causes of these accidents are not far fetched as most of the time, it could be prevented from happening. It is quite sad to behold an accident scene where vehicles and several lives are lost.

Tears are rolling down my eyes as I make this report seeing young men and ladies losing lives due to accidents and vehicles are damaged.

An eye withness account reports that a fatal accident has occured which has a bus owned by a state transport company along the portharcourt -Enugu express way. This is close to ohiya where a popular mechanic village is located in umuahia.

This eye withness reports that the faulty vehicle sumersauted several times and finally came to a standstill and lives were lost while many others sustained different degrees of pains and injuries.

When prior investigations were made, report has it that the driver of the vehicle may have been feeling sleepy during driving, and so this resulted to the accident. The driver on his own side, is said to have sustained a minor injury.

The remaining passengers who Survived the accident sustained injuries and were quickly rushed to the federal medical center to recieve and are currently receiving medical attention. The other corpses of the rest of the passengers has been deposited at the FMC morgue in umuahia.

The Need For A Thorough Vehicle Inspection
Sometimes I begin to wonder why some vehicle, even in their faulty condition, should find their way on the road. Is there not an agency that inspects the condition of vehicles before coming out to the roads? Coming to the transportation companies, why would they still be using faulty vehicles to convey people? This is absurd! It should be condemned at all levels.

This kind of accident is a wake up call to all quarters to ensure that vehicles should be in a good working condition before plying the roads to convey people.

CAUSES OF ROAD ACCIDESNTS

Accidents does not just happen. Accidents happen because of not adhering to rules that are meant to safeguard road users. It is unfortunate that even when road users know about the rules set to safeguard everyone, they would however, ignore it. Some of the causes of road accidents include:

• Drinking while driving

• Having faulty vehicles plying the roads

• Bad roads

• Drivers with mental health challenges

• Over speeding

HOW TO REDUCE ROAD ACCIDESNTS ON THE ROADS

Road accidents like the one I just reported, could be prevented from happening if safety measures were observed. How does it please people to see others losing their lives because of carelessnes or ignorance? There are rules that should be srictly enforeced so that the lives of road every road user could be safe. They are:

• Faulty vehicles should not be allowed to ply the roads

• Drivers should be tested alcohol-free before driving

• Drivers should be subjected to mental health examination

• Over speeding should be heavily sanctioned

• Drinking alcohol before or during driving should be severely purnished

• The roads should be made motorable, fiixed, or maintained from time to time, to avoid accidents that may occur as a result of bad roads.

• Drivers should not carry more than the specified number of seats they have in their vehicle

• Transportation companies should have insurance policies that covers thesm and their passengers in case of any eventuality such as this.

These are my submisions as to what could be done to reduce road accidents, and with regards to our weekly neighborhood reporting of events around us.
