We are all familiar with the phrase as blind as a bat well that is very wrong bats are not blind that is a popular misconception gotten from the fact that Bats are nocturnal animals, which means that they are mostly active in the night to add there are species of bats which have well developed eye structures.

So if bats are active in the night how do they manage without little or no light well they do this and more through something we call echolocation, that is what my post today is all about so please enjoy.

THE ECHOLOCATION SYSTEM.

The bat echolocation system is a complex mechanism, a biological sonar radar system and this is how it works, Bats emits high frequency sound waves which are too high for the human hearing, these sound waves are reflected and re- reflected by objects in the environments and using this rebounding of the echoes to interpret and map out it surroundings and objects in their location and this process happens so fast making this process very efficient.

Researchers have imitated the bats echolocation mechanism to develop a walking cane for blind people to help them visualize and map out their surroundings and avoid obstacles even at head height.

THE ADVANTAGE IN HUNTING.

Imagine being hunted in the night or in the dark by a monster or person or something with night vision scary right because you will be sitting ducks, lamb for the slaughter now imagine being the doing the hunting with night vision yeah right.

The same way too the bats also use echolocation to determine with incredible precision, detecting the size, distance and shape of objects surrounding their prey and using this information as a tactical advantage and wickedly grab their prey.

It is also very important and vital that the bat's echolocation be precise seeing as an error or miscalculation of even one millisecond could result the bat to miss it's target by over fifteen centimeters and whilst some researchers might say that a precision greater than one millisecond is most likely impossible but experiments suggests that bats have a precision of hundreds megaseconds.

COMMUNICATION AND SOCIALIZATION.

Apart from mapping out its environment the bats echolocation is also used to locate other bats, socialize and communicate and also identify each other in the dark.

This helps to foster social bonds amongst the bats colony and also aid activities like hunting together and roosting.

IN CONCLUSION the bat echolocation serves as a testimony of the marvels of survival adaptation in the diverse ecological habitat in the animal kingdom.

From precision hunting and fostering social bonds, echolocation plays a number of roles in the life of this nocturnal creature.

Understanding and appreciating the amazing functions of bat echolocation increases the appreciation for the natural world but also reveals the intricate systems that allows these creatures to survive and thrive in the dark.
