I wouldn't want to go through that. I can imagine how difficult the last months have been for you. I am sure that the level of veterinary medicine, and access to it, in Germany is much higher than in Ukraine. But even in spite of this, it is impossible to escape from many diseases. Undoubtedly, these are economic losses, but they are not in the first place. It's hard to lose animals you love and I understand that well.
But the end of the post inspires hope 🙂
That's right, an animal owner doesn't want to experience something like that, it was terrible. To make matters worse, this is my first year as a sheep farmer. The plans for 2024 were somehow different... I am totally insecure.
I can't judge to what extent veterinary skills differ between Ukraine and Germany. The fact is that there is still no medication for BTV and all alternative treatment options take too long. There are already some good vets, but the problem is that only a few are familiar with small ruminants (sheep are not small cows), which, as potential prey, are almost dead before they show that they are not well.
Regarding Elton's claw, the doctors are at a loss. I now plan to ask an experienced shepherd to take a look at the animal (I don't know the man, hope he comes). Otherwise we'll have to take Elton to the clinic. But then you have to ask yourself at some point with livestock... Most shepherds wouldn't (be able to) pay all those high vet bills...
But we continue to hope optimistically!
I hope you understand that this is an unfortunate coincidence. It so happened that it was your fate to encounter a rather new and dangerous disease of sheep. Perhaps many generations of shepherds have not gone through something like you. It's not your fault. It's natural to be insecure, but it's better for the sheep that you pull yourself together and adopt this approach:
