Again & Again - We should All Be Feminists

Hi friends, trust you all are good.😊
I'm super excited to be participating in this activity about an interesting book i've read before and would love to read again and again. The name of the book is "we should all be feminists" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

HOW I GOT THE BOOK

Last year while I was still in school, we had a presentation where everyone was expected to bring up a topic and discuss it in class for grading. A particular colleague in class came up when it was her turn and said "My topic is we should all be feminists" and immediately everyone started chattering and whispering among themselves. Some including myself wondered "what sort of topic is this, of all topics this"?

After that colleague finished presenting the topic, she sent a few of the book copies to the class and encouraged us all to purchase and read and then the class gave her a thundering applause. Why the sudden change? We all had a vague view of the concept "Feminism" until that day

When I returned, I kept the book in the book shelf for over an extended period of time. Infact after I was done with school three months ago, one day, I decided to do my regular cleaning of the shelves, I picked the book out, looked at it like it was some new book and I just kept the book aside to read later and when I finally did, I kept wondering why I didn't opened it earlier. I was so glad I did!

ABOUT THE BOOK
As I turned the final page of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's book, I came to realize that feminism is NOT about striving to be better than men, struggling for power head on with men or trying to create a world where women are recognized over men in all the high places. It is about creating a balanced world where everyone has the freedom to pursue their goals and aspirations without being confined by gender roles.
Indeed a woman should not be confined to doing house chores and other domestic activities, should not be denied education and shouldn't be denied positions of work that she clearly is a good fit and is qualified to take on.

I can actually relate to these and I've seen it happen a lot around me. Let me cite an example. In this book the writer indicated that she went out with her husband and bought groceries one day at a store. After paying from her purse, she decided to give the seller a nice tip. The man's face lit up with happiness and he said "thank you sir".

She was confused as to why he wouldn't appreciate her as sir when he clearly saw her taking out money from her purse. Later she wrote that the man said thank you sir because he believed that certainly she wouldn't make so much money enough to give him such a nice tip and it was her husband who must have given her the money.

On a different occasion, a female friend of mine applied for a job and was called to be told the venue for the interview over the phone, the pay was so good and it was a position she was so qualified for, after some minutes of talking with her "would be" boss. She asked a tactful question and the man said "Wait am I speaking to a lady"? Needless to say, that was the end of the interview and the end of that job. She was so sad, she never even had a chance to prove her worth.

WHAT I LEARNT FROM THE BOOK
Feminism isn't about treating men as incompetent or with disrespect. It is about creating a society where all can have equal chances, all input can be respected, taken into consideration and acted upon regardless of gender. I definitely will read this book again and again 🤗

Thank you for sharing this, though I've not read the book before, I'll try and get a copy to digest all the chapters.

Meanwhile from what I read from this post, I support feminism, career women are always supportive, our society need women that can stand out to defend themselves and others.

Oh thanks so much for this comment. Our society needs to evolve for the better

Indeed we should all be feminists
