In Atlético Madrid’s La Liga winning season, one of the crucial figures if not the most crucial was former Real Madrid midfielder who joined Atletico 2 years back, Marcos Llorente. Marcos Llorente is a defensive midfielder. At Real Madrid, he was a backup for Casemiro. But he left them for Atletico pursuing more game time. That decision has been a correct one for Llorente.
Marcos Llorente has become a key player for Atletico Madrid. Llorente has been deployed in multiple positions due his versatility and adaptability. He can play right wing, right-back, right wingback, defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder, or second striker. Llorente has played excellently for Atletico wherever he has been played. He is now a very reliable player. With 12 goals and 11 assists in La Liga 20/21, Llorente had 23 goal involvements. His numbers are amazing. But he has been as solid with his defensive contributions too. After his incredible transformation at Atletico, He's a player to watch.
He's a highly dangerous player going forward on the flanks. He can be a crucial part in build-up as he can create chances as well as finish those chances. To add more, he has agility, strong physique and blistering pace. Like his abilities in those attacking positions, Llorente is reliable while defending too. In a friendly match for his country Spain, Llorente played as a right-back and did very well. Llorente has been previously used as a right-back But it's still a tricky question where Llorente should play because if he plays as a right-back, his offensive exploits are being nullified to some extent. Would you want to waste your best runner, creator or the most athletic player in a defensive position rather than keeping him active for attacking build-up plays?
Marcos Llorente should definitely start as a right-winger. But in the national team that's a problem. As that way, Llorente can make the best use of his qualities going forward, like the way he plays for Atlético. But Ferran Torres has been very impressive for Spain which makes it unfair to drop him. So, starting Llorente at right-back should be the way. Wherever Marcos Llorente plays, going to be one of Spain’s main men for everything he adds to the team. Regardless of the positions, you’ll see Llorente everywhere on the pitch. He is a young talented player and a star in the making.
